Shutter when backing up and turning

My 2005 Pre Runner double cab V6 with LDS rear end developed a shutter when slowly backing up and turning to either side.

I checked the brakes to see if they were grabbing and there is no indication of that happening.

When I take the truck out of gear and let it coast in neutral, there is no shutter so I am thinking either a drive shaft condition or a problem in the rear differential.

The rear end gear oil has been kept up with 75W -90 synthetic with a friction reducer additive and all was good when I did it about 3000 miles ago.

Any ideas from the hive?

 

Did you add a bottle of additive, or rely on the additive in the oil? I have never found the amount of additive in the oils to be enough. I haven't owned an LS for years, but this was my go to additive:

I added a bottle to the oil

 

I have had better luck running convential, non synthetic gear oil in my LSD and adding a tube of this additive:

While you're inspecting everything have a good look at the u-joints. I had a similar issue and recently looked underneath to find one of the joints about a hundred miles from exploding

I replaced it and it not only eliminated the back up noise but also cured a horrible shudder in the road from 45 - 60 MPH.

 

OK, I solved the shutter problem. It seemed to start shortly after changing the rear end fluid to Car Quest 80W-90 full synthetic from Auto Zone and adding a bottle of Trans X along with the change. I have used Trans X and Valvoline conventional 80W-90 fluid on all my former changes (30K 0r less) since the get go.

With that in mind, as well as drive line problems and differential problems as a possibility, I decided to choose the easiest and fastest route first and that was to go back to my original method of Valvoline and Trans X.

After the dump of Car Quest and change to Valvoline, I backed out of the driveway and left the shutter behind. It is gone.

Just a heads up to all who, like me, felt that synthetic fluid is the best of the best. It may be, but not in all cases.

Something else that is good to do after changing the rear dif oil is to find a parking lot and do 5 or 6 figure eights to make sure the new oil and LSD additive are mixed together and to get all that fresh oil spread over the clutch pack.

 

Lol my truck did this when I bought it off the lot. Used it to talk down the price. The mechanical LSDs are annoying imo. They will eventually wear out and then you're stuck sourcing a replacement from a junkyard. I'm a big fan of truetrac lsd and the like
