As the title states, I got a fender bender (second time) and plan on getting a high clearance plate bumper. Is there a way to get a check from insurance company or only repair? State is Minnesota if that matters. IMG_1341.jpg

Maybe, maybe have to pay a deductible. Any insurance from the person who hit you? Insurance might want to get it repaired but if you get a depreciation check from the person who hit you, that should cover a new upgrade with some extra in your pocket.

I am going to speak from experience in Louisiana. My wife got rear ended in her Honda Odyssey. The other parties insurance asked us to get an estimate. We got three estimates, turned in the highest one, they said we can have it repaired there or they can cut us a check. I chose the check, got a taillight from the junkyard, touched up the paint chips on the bumper, and the rest for us to enjoy.
Who's insurance is paying? That may or may not make a difference.

To clarify, I didn't cause the accident. Last time this happened the others insurance wanted nothing but to pay the shop to do the repairs. I didn't try to get a check at that time.

By the way, is your rear suspension up to the task of the extra weight hanging off the rear?

Another factor may be, if the vehicle is paid off or on a loan or lease. I'm not sure if it matters, just a thought. In our case, the van was paid off and we had the title.

I am paid off, I don't see how that could make any difference to an insurance adjuster.

I'm not sure if it does, it was just a thought. But since you are paid off, you should be able to get a check no problem.

You must like high prices and long lead times

Just kidding (not really), get what you want. Look around and decide what’s right for you. Lots of good looking bumpers out there

I see what your saying. I just want what I think looks good. They are all strong and built well, but some Tacoma armor looks like they didn't try to make it look good at all. Cbi is simple but works well with the truck. Relentless follows that bed body line. Haven't seen a picture of SOS HC rear yet, I'm always open to new.

Yup. Our 2018 sustained identical damage (even the bedside paint got scuffed up a bit). We got 1800 from the other parties insurance in the form of a check which instantly went to CBI. Got high clear rear bumper coming sometime in July now. Do it. Stock bumpers are a joke.

If it’s not paid off, you don’t actually own the vehicle, you have a lien on it. so it might not be your choice. If the vehicle has to be repossessed last thing the actual owner (lien holder) wants is a damaged vehicle.

This ^ if its not paid off, the insurance will not issue you a check, they will only pay the repair shop.

Had a similar situation just about a month ago - I was rear ended while stopped at a traffic light. Guy who hit me agreed to pay cash vs go through insurance, which amounted to $1,600 after a formal inspection.

Putting the money towards a standard plate bumper with ATH (At The Helm) Fabrication, should be in by end of next month. I'd recommend checking them out - great form factor, design and fair price.

Sorry to hear that you got rear ended.... twice, surely frustrating. I agree with bnv’s suggestion, 5A87F951-1781-4114-8928-99EC10649B38.jpg maybe get a super bumper with your repair. It has an external and internal compression system. At the very least, it’s a visual deterrent to back off.

Lots of good info regarding lien status and insurance payouts!

Didn't mean for this thread to turn into a plate bumper recommendation's thread. I appreciate the suggestions but I've looked at all the available High Clarence bumpers 6 months ago. Unless anything new has come out, CBI and Relentless are the only ones that float my boat.

The hitch-tail step is a neat solution if I didn't wheel. I'm looking for a high clearance for the most trail protection I can get. I also wouldn't be apposed to some more weight sitting on the Deaver's.

A tiny bit of extra weight isnt going to make much of a difference since theyre designed to handle a significant load in the bed.
