With mini vans and their legions of minions I’d say your average mall parking lot is more dangerous than the gnarliest trail

California here and I have actually used them for their intended purpose. 4 and 5 foot waterfalls are terrible for the undercarriage and rocker panels.

4wd isn’t necessary around here. A cover and rack may be for him though. I haven’t taken my Tacoma off road, and don’t plan on it, but on my old 4Runner I did, and larger better tires and a lift helped, and I destroyed the old skid plate so probably needed armor - all in 2wd. The off roading around here is in old strip mines, the ground is compact enough, mud usually isn’t think enough, but it’s a lot of ruts and bumps and holes, you really just need a little clearance and decent tires and 2wd is just fine. This isn’t my truck, but he probably felt he didn’t need to spend the extra $4,000 for 4wd for no reason for the area he lives in. That extra $4000 probably bought his rack, cover and sliders. Looks like maybe an RTT may go on that platform above the bed? Maybe he uses it for camping not hardcore off roading? Of course this picture looks like the truck is parked between Lowe’s and Wawa, almost perfect for mall crawling. While I know exactly where this picture was taken I don’t know the owner of this truck, just seems everyone on this forum always seems to think everyone needs 4wd all the time. 2wd will get you by just fine in many areas.

Because, the decal on the bed doesn’t have 4X4 on it.

Now it seems like they are everywhere you turn.

The amusing parts of that to me are

    1) there are no parts on any Tacoma developed in their racing program. So TRD isn't.

    2) why in the world would you ever name a 2wd an OR? While it can be used that way, it generally isn't.

The 2wd OR still has the locker. Instead of mud or rock crawling, think pre-runner desert type stuff.
