3rd gen taco 2.7L, so....ive read on here, most of you guys remove the secondary (charcoal) air filter. for better mpg? and better throttle response? my question is has anyone done it on there 3rd gen tacos? and had any check engine lights come on or warning?

asking before i do it myself.

I’ve done it, no dash lights came on, no noticeable difference in throttle response.

I’m probably just polluting more, but my exhaust is still cleaner than the air in a lot of major cities.

Maybe because the V6 is already a beast of an engine. o_O Or just already maxed out. Seriously don’t know, but would make sense there’s more gains possible for the 4cyl.

There was a pretty strong thread on this back in the day. IIRC there was no noticeable benefit.

Depends on if you’re in CA and they take a peek during the inspection, or if the inspect and deny warranty based on removal. Some people have had luck drilling out where the plastic is spot welded so it can be replaced if need be, you just wanna mind the plastic debris. If you do it, report back. Your MIL won’t be triggered.

You’re gonna remove the charcoal filter and install an AFE pro dry. Thats a bold move.

AFE doesn’t filter as well as it should have, in my case and in at least one other member here. I’ve found contamination upstream from the filter. It seemed like a legit idea, but after k&n and the pro dry, I’ll stick with OEM. Thats what I recommend.

I just watched a youtube video on this from "Engineering Explained" I believe. While he did this very test on a Subaru he proved there was no sort of gain at all by removing the charcoal filter. Dyno tested back to back in the video.

I recall seeing the video as well. I'll not be removing mine. Little or no gain, yet the possibility of state inspection rejection or warranty issues. I'm not a tree hugger by any means, but as I understand it, that filter is there to prevent gases from air contamination at engine shut off. If it does that (engineers say it does) and there's no benefit to removal... well mine will stay in.
