New member here. I've been reading a lot of backlog forum threads. Very helpful - so thank you. Some background on my situation:

Have moved out to rural Texas after retiring due to a medical situation. Instead of the two vehicles I have today ('16 Honda CRV and '10 Toyota Tundra), I'd like to sell them outright or trade them in on a 2020 Tacoma Pro when the new model becomes available. The Tundra has been great, but it's too big for what I'd be using it for now. I figure one midsize truck and that'll be fine for me.

I'm outside the DFW area, so there are 3 dealerships within striking distance of me. Several questions for the group:

    1) Anyone tried to buy a Pro right when the new model year starts? Was it like pulling teeth? Did you have to sacrifice a goat or anything? I know I'd get better pricing later in the 2020 model year, but I don't want to wait that long. I'd be happy at or a bit under MSRP.

    2) As I want one of two specific colors (white or MGM), have you found that dealerships are willing to trade Pros around or will I need to find one on the ground and deal with the dealership that has the one I want?

    3) I'm planning on leaving the new truck stock. No big changes to the suspension or height. So a Pro seems to make the most sense to me.

    4) Would you recommend ordering one (when that becomes available)? Or would you wait until the actual units hit the lots? I'd like to get in line and order the specific truck I want, but I'm a bit hesitant to do that as it'll lock me into a dealership...

Thanks for any and all help and advice you can give.

    1) It's easy if you're willing to pay, supply and demand. Be prepared to spend over MSRP.

    2) Pro's only come in 3 colors and I believe 2020's will be white, black and the new hunter green. Finding one at a dealer would be easier as dealer trades require both dealerships to agree to the trade and Pro's are in high demand so dealers are least willing to trade a Pro.

    3) Pro's are cool, but a lot of great after market brands. I have OME suspension on my limited and it rides just as high as a Pro.

    4) I would personally go this route because you will know the salesman you're dealing with and can negotiate the price ahead of time so that when the truck arrives everything is already agreed. One slight clarification, Toyota doesn't do orders they allocate. So a dealer can request an allocation from Toyota that would be exactly what you want, but Toyota doesn't build to what dealerships ask for.

    Hope this helps.

    Welcome to TW!

You are going to find TRD Pro prices vary greatly by region.

Based on what I saw with my local dealer, this my input:

    1) Yes. At best dealers don’t want to haggle on Pro. Unless they have no alternative and get stuck with one, which is not common.

    2) No. Dealers keep Pros close to their chest. My Toyota dealer gets one Pro every six weeks or so, and they rarely sit for more than 2-3 weeks on the lot. They did offer to order one for me; it takes about 8 weeks to get. And they were very clear that their policy is not to sell one to people coming from out of town.

    3) Sure. Personally, I think Pro should deliver more than it actually does in order to justify its “status”. But others seem happy with theirs.

4). I’d wait to shop for one until this time next year and see how the market looks. Economic indicators are hinting that the economy is slowing down and will continue to do so. Dealers get more willing to negotiate as the economic tanks. I’d get rid of the CR-V and keep the Tundra until the time is ripe to trade in. Tundra’s resale is better than CR-V’s. You don’t want to be in a position of having to sell TWO vehicles in a weakening economy.

    Good luck.

Check with your online sales folks. They knocked $3,500 off MSRP for my ‘18 without any haggling. I physically walked in vs phone dancing.

Thanks, folks. Very much appreciated. Any info that I can gather now makes me a better buyer when the new models hit the lots.

I thought I read some where that the 2020 pro would be 4 colors, white, black, MGM and the new army green. But I can't find that article anymore

    What about the colors?

2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro will be available in 4 different color choices: Super White, Midnight Black Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic and Army Green. Gone are the Cavalry Blue seen in the 2018 model and Voodoo Blue from this year’s 2019 Pro. What do you think about Army Green on the upcoming TRD Pro?

Bad news: you're in the Gulf States distributor region. This means whatever truck you get will probably have some dealer or port options added (whether you like it or not.) They also only trade vehicles with other dealers in this region (OK, TX, LA, MS, AL). As others have said, they may not trade Pros at all. Consider the OR as a possible trim package, the suspension is the main difference between the two, and the OR is more widely available / more configurable / cheaper.

Don't be afraid to look on autotrader and get a truck shipped or do a fly n drive (I did to get the trim and packages and MT I wanted).
