The internet service provider responsible for the fiasco above came calling with solutions to fix our "lack" of redundancy. It was a sight to behold. Our sales rep and two minions sitting in front of our senior network engineers, management and CIO. Telling us how important internet and telephone service is, and if we only bought more services things would be better. And I'm having WTF moments throughout the whole thing. I'm like really?! Having an entire organization down for 2 days is a problem, who'd a thunk? We pay a literal shit ton to you every month and you want us to buy more services when you can't provide the basic ones we're already paying for.

The CIO wasn't having any part of it, and I knew he wouldn't. He held them to account about the redundant lines and his lack of interest in more products. The good news for us is we will be saving half a shit ton of money as soon as the engineers are ready to cut the redundant line. Not much point in paying for it as it does fuckall. The bad news is it will be spent with another provider after the procurement process is finished.

Welcome to 2005. That's when my company did something similar. Having always been on the OPS side of things from time to time I wanted to hurt a dev when they just threw stuff over the wall. The change was for the better.

 

Would any of you happen to know of a good source for Google Drive training? I'm hoping to educate our small group of front-office users.

Oh goodness. You know, it does help having the dev and ops teams closer together, but in large IT orgs it is really hard to do true DevOps. It may work for smaller products/systems. I combined my dev and ops teams at my previous company, and it did help both teams see things from the other side. Got tired of hearing the Ops guys saying "they keep dumping crap code in" while the Devs keep saying "those Ops guys don't know what they are doing." It helped the Ops side get a deeper learning and stay more connected to where things were going, and helped the Dev team build cleaner stuff with better error handling and logging to make things easier to support.

But, it's not a one-size-fits-all thing. Kool-Aid has been drunk.

 

My boss is the leader of our dev ops initiative at our company and she wanted me to learn more about it. Our IT department is around 300 people and we’ve had this initiative for about three years now with little progress

 

Coming from a large organization myself, it's all about compartmentalizeation. Break it down to different parts, then dev/op the parts. Ex: have a acctg dev/ops team, hr dev/ops and so on. Yes you may have a few EE's in multiple dev/ops for your size, but if you contine to grow, they may branch out as the need more more EE's are needed.

Luck for sure, thanks. Imagine a Fortune 1 company, lol. We do have it compartmentalized similar to your example, just a little more granular. That's part of the difficulty. Searching for that balance.

 

Not trying to compare ball size here and really didn't know what shop you were from and was just trying to help. That was just an example. But i too get what you're saying. Will need to be more granular.

Sorry, I missed making my point. It was more about due to the size, the granularity starts to diminish the whole value of DevOps. And in some cases, it's just not the right way to manage the space. Lots of areas mainly deal with administration of 3rd-party apps and don't have developers, and yet they put everyone through the training and try to drive it across the board.

New leader come in? Funny how some of them go from place to place just doing reorgs. I expect we might have one soon, we have a new one coming in next month.

 

Musical executives, and the guy going to lead the global infrastructure group (which is massive) wants to peel us away from EPMO and move us BACK into IT ops where we used to be.

I just want to be able to order business cards without fear of everything changing. It's getting hard to keep up with my office routing address in a week-to-week basis.

 

I'm just going to put a sign on my door "What Changed?"

Tech - Some of the SIP devices at another office won't register.

Me - What have you checked?

Tech - I've rebooted the head end and end points but nothing works.

Me - What did we discuss in change control this week?

Tech - that the network team was tightening security?

Me - and . . . ?

Tech - What Changed?

Tech - (Light bulb turning on) Oh! they changed the subnet mask and . . . (running out the door to fix the problem)

"What changed" is my secret weapon.
