You are making a bit much about it. Use the Win7 machine until you upgrade. If needed, plug in to an extension cord or the bed outlet. I was in the same boat with our old laptop from 2009 that takes 10min+ to fully boot and launch Flash Manager. I'm stoked with the new, smaller machine. If I go on a trip, you bet that it will come along for other reasons.

I have used plenty of software that locks to computers (dongles, NIC MAC address, and others). It is the way of software registration these days. Yes, there are more invisible means, but do you want to pay another $100 for more elegant licensing? Not me.

I get what you are saying, but automated licensing schemes that are used by other software vendors are backed up by a ton of $$$$ in software development and support. Mat is doing this basically all the software development himself with another developer doing the flash software. I do use software that have some crazy licensing schemes/restrictions (ePlan, GE Proficy, Allen Bradley, Siemens, etc.). In the grand scheme of things, if you have a dedicated laptop, jumping through the hoops once isn't that bad. I personally prefer that Mat spend his efforts tuning than developing a more streamlined licensing method.

Edit: Doh! I linked up a Chromebook.

I'd say that any of those options would be great?

    @OVTune

I emailed y'all about running your tune with 5.29s and your response was that it works perfectly and there are no issues.
I then had 2 people in the next 5 days message me on instagram, asking if I was running 5.29s with OVtune...
They expressed issues with a "Speed governor" and shared that the OV team is aware of this.

Can you provide some clarification here?

I'm still partial to the Lenovo T430 or T420 linked below. Those Celeron processors are painfully slow and with only 2g of ram you're gonna have a bad time. They will probably work, but it wont be fun. 32Gb SSD is also going to be tight on space to keep windows up to date.

No! As @lapoltba reminded me, I completely forgot about that aspect. Sorry.

Sorry, didn't realize I was making a big fuss?

Yes there are more invisible means, I agree.

I hope at some point the OV team has the bandwidth to implement those, that's all.

I'd say yes? I'm not saying to not wish for more, but understand that there are costs associated. Also, older OVT folks are still (stuck?) using the dongle for security. There was no free upgrade (downgrade?) when the new licensing system rolled out.

    RE: laptops

I won't go the super-cheap option that is dedicated ONLY to the tune.

Even if it's just a small one to keep in the truck, I'm sure i'll end up using it for far more than just tuning.
So I'm thinking minimum 8gb ram, and decent amount of space.

Costco has some really good options under 500 bucks, so I'll probably go that route.

That's the thing I am looking for ONLY using it for the tune. I do not want to spend more than $200 for it. Any ideas on that would be ideal.

I use Macs for EVERYTHING else.
