Ok so I have a 2000 tacoma. Its a 2.7L 4x4 5 speed. I replaced the factory 2.7 with a 2.7 out of another 2000 tacoma 4x4 5 speed. I noticed that the valve covers are different. Did they use more than 1 valve cover for the 2.7 in 2000? I'm attaching a pic of the 2.7 I'm trying to hook up in my tacoma. And a pic of the valve cover that I need. Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated. I can't find anything online on the matter. Thanks

If I remember correctly 2000 was when they switched from a dual coil pack set up to 4 individual pack on plug set up... which do you have?

Maybe cousin should fund the replacement?

It took a lot of digging to find the part numbers lol. The whole engine part diagram is seemingly hard to find. I can send the picture here in a second.

    https://parts.olathetoyota.com/auto...rim/2-7l-l4-gas-engine/engine-cat/engine-scat

This has the diagram and part numbers for the 2000 2.7L. If you look at the parts list there are two parts for the 2000 2.7L valve cover. A "federal" and a "california." So they might have started switching over due to emissions laws(?) not entirely sure.

    https://parts.olathetoyota.com/auto...rim/2-7l-l4-gas-engine/engine-cat/engine-scat

If you look at the 2001 part diagram there is only one part number. You can look in your doorjamb on the sticker to see if you have a "federal" or "california" taco, let me know if you can't figure it out. Must have something to do with smog testing and stuff in california.

Thanks. I'll check the part numbers in a few mins.

Depending on where you are and what kind of junk yards/pick a parts you have in your area, you may have luck finding one there. I never get Tacomas in the yard near me but one just popped up and was able to snag the valve cover. Was like $25. Easier to paint a spare instead of the one on a daily driver.

won't necessarily work cause 2000 was a transition year so there are two possible parts and he's trying to figure out of his donor engine is a california spec one or not

Local junk yards who actually pull the parts (i.e. they have the part off the engine) will send you a picture or confirm the part. You can always pick up a phone as well.

You probably don't need to get the newer valve cover, just stick the coils in and see if it works. Looks like the main difference is the bolt holes to bolt the coils down, but usually they suction on the head and plug pretty good and don't move around. I would just use that one till you find the right one later.

The bolt on ones seal the spark tube though right? Would the other kind keep moisture out?

That is what the rubber oring on the bottom of the coil does if it's not old and shrunken, a little oil will help restore it again. The bolt just holds it in place, but unless you are Baja racing it isn't going to pop out.
Lots of people use those coils on heads that weren't designed for coilpacks, I haven't had one pop out before.
You would have to have coolant pooling in that area for moisture to matter, remember the original spark plug tubes for the distributor didn't have a bolt to hold them down and the tubes don't fill up with anything.
The perfect thing to do would be to swap to the right cover, but I wouldn't loose any sleep on reusing the old cover either.

The only thing would be if they are different heights, the coil vs the old plug wire tube. If they are the same height then just stick then in and give it a gentle pull upwards. If it's suctioned in place it's good, if it doesn't then swap covers.

So if it's California spec will it run fine after I swap valve covers or do I have to change anything else?

And the coils won't go in all the way where it's not the right cover...would I be able to possibly swap the coils? But I'm trying to do it the cheapest way cause we just bought a house. Limited funds right now
