Good afternoon everybody! I have a question. Is it normal to change your car/truck every 30-60K miles? Down here in the (Rio Grande Valley Pharr, McAllen, Mission, etc , Tx) a lot of people change their vehicles every 2-3 years, heck, I have a friend who says he changes vehicles before its time to change tires. Is this just a valley thing? Or is there a large chunk of people like tht everywhere? I thought it was just rich people down here, but then again a lot of the people who do this aren't rich, just act like it and in some places where people are really rich they drive not so new vehicles. What gives? Everyone looks at me weird when I tell em Im gonna hit 1,000,000 on my truck and then Toyota is gonna have to give me a free truck.

In California it's a common thing. Most people just lease here.

Financial ignorance and vanity? I put 250k construction miles on my last Tacoma.

Yeah its definitely vanity. Theres people here from a certain part of Mexico that really like to ruin things like the flow of traffic and pretending to be rich. One guy used to call me poor for driving a Tacoma lol

I'm starting to think that MOST folks lease 2 or 3 year leases. Not for me. You're basically renting. No pride or enjoyment of ownership whatsoever.

Yeah idk I just dumped a freaking balls load of money into an older low miles truck. Enough to make payments for 3 years at least.
My brother lost an engine at 3.5 years and 26k cost him 10k.
It can be a wash of money. I'm starting to think a 3 year lease is a cheaper way to go with all the problems we have had.
Then if it goes bad I'll just drop there truck back off.

Can confirm in L.A. area, a lot of people lease. I think for most that do, it’s because the lease appears to let them into nicer cars for the status symbol.

I go about 3 years and then buy new. That's right around 100k for me and it's either I trade it in with some positive equity or keep it forever and drive the vehicle into the ground. But I drive so much that usually every 3 years I am getting a new vehicle. Honestly it's all like renting/leasing. I just have a car payment forever- it's a cost of living for me. I'll have a car payment as long as I am working, that's for sure.

I’d hate changing trucks every 2-3 years. The older I get, the more I appreciate what $$ I have. Changing trucks like that is just money out the window.

I truly don’t care what anyone else thinks.

@Wixo , how close are you to 1 mil? Who told you ‘Yota was gonna give you a new truck?

    Congrats in any case.

I typically replace mine around 75k miles. I plan on keeping this truck much longer... but we'll see.

I feel ya. I think the difference is that this is the most expensive, nicest vehicle I've ever owned, so I could easily see myself being happy with it for well over 75k

It’s nice properly buying a vehicle and maintaining it through the years... not many people seem to know how to take care of their things for more than a few weeks and then it’s onto the next when the lease expires. I take more pride in keeping my “fleet” running and looking new, even when some are nearly 40 years old vehicles.

Never done it. This is my 4th vehicle since I got my license in ‘75, 1st was the Cortina my two older brothers and I learned stick in, then new ‘89 Ranger, last two were lease purchases(‘99 Ranger bought in ‘01 and ‘14 Tacoma bought ‘17. No one else in my family either. I dunno about “most” people since there are a lot of cars here too old to be lease vehicles. I know one couple that does but they also own one outright. Given that some people do buy I’d put the percentage south of 30%, certainly not “most”.

My MIL leases every 2-3 years. Her motto that she learned from her father is keep your car fresh. As in trade it in for new every 2-3 years. Not sure why he taught her that but that’s the way she is. And she leases new Cadillacs so she acts like it’s a status symbol yet I make more than she does and I drive a Toyota. It comes down to that she likes status and likes to spend money. I like to save and I don’t care what the person sitting at the light next to me thinks. However, I do get a lot of compliments on my truck. Probably more than her precious leased caddy

Edit: my wife and I just had our 2nd child on the 19th. My wife drives a 2014 Acura RDX with 71k miles and my MIL freaks out. She said we need to upgrade to something safe and reliable for our 2 kids. I just laugh at her comments
