I'll use 4-low to get up a boat ramp, but that's it. I'd never use 4x4 towing on dry pavement.

 

2019 Taco Pro Line, Voodoo Blue, 6spd manual, dragging a Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH, dry weight 3820lbs, averaged 8.5mpg between 60-65mph in 5th gear, hilly countryside forced the use of 4th gear often.

 

I like that color. How do you feel it does pulling your trailer?

This model R pod is a 179 which has plenty of counter space and inside storage. It’s quite comfortable for two and we like it, although the toilet is a bit tight. It is the right weight when loaded so the truck pulls well with no strain. All within advertised and normal parameters.

 

It's not a full size pickup for sure, as they say there's no replacement for displacement (or turbos). I'm happy with the setup, it's limited to 65mph in 5th gear. You definitely know you're towing 4000lbs. For what my wife uses the truck for it'll do, a full size truck doesn't fit in my home garage which is important during the winter, otherwise I would've purchased a larger truck. Welcome to the under 10 mpg club. Ugh! With these small gas tanks I’m filling up constantly it seems like. Looking at 38 gal Tundras.

 

Can someone help me to understand why say a 2019 Tacoma 2x4 can pull only 3500 pounds but the 4x4 model can pull 6400? They seems like the same build with some exceptions (i.e. 4x4 trans.).

Chassis strength, gearing, power. The 4x2 chassis, except the Pre-Runners (I believe they're no longer offered), are different from the 4x4 chassis. Not to mention the suspensions are different, the 4x2's were built for ride quality. The '09 4x2, I4, 5spd, SR5 I still own couldn't tow a 2000lb (3500lb rated) pop-up without the headlights turning into search lights during a air raid, that was after adding Bilstein shocks, and factory Canadian rated rear springs (4 leaf vs 3 leaf). I added Firestone air bags, which leveled the ride, which made the pop-up easy to tow.

 

Finally tested out the trailer I built for the ATV. Stout enough to pull the quad, light enough to be pulled by the quad. The best thing though, I can unhook it with the machine on the trailer and still lift the tongue and move the trailer around.

We wanted something small enough not to be even close to a towing capability question. Also anywhere the truck was able to fit.

 

Anyone here do landscaping? My dad is planning on starting a landscaping business and plans on getting 2 zero turn mowers, a few blowers, a few trimmers, etc. along with a double axle closed trailer. Can the Tacoma do this or would a full size be needed?

~500km each way, 8hrs of driving, ~90kmph, ECT on.
~20L/100km (11.7mpg), CLT ~90C, ATF ~90C, Max range 300km (fuel light on, 'please refuel').

 

If he's towing all of that at once, I'd go full-sized. A Tacoma may be able to handle it, (depending on the weights of the trailer and the mowers) but a full size would handle it more easily and more confidently. YMMV.

 

Yes he would. And I agree completely. All a matter of whether gas or diesel.
