Higher revving while using cruise control?

Anybody else notice this or am just really mellow on the gas pedal ?

When I have cruise control on the engine seems to rev a much higher than if I self-control the gas pedal - like cruising at 65 I'll keep it at about 2K, while CC will have it up around 3K.

Also, any way to mellow out the cruise control response - if I have it set at speed X and there is a care if front of me going slower the adaptive cruse will go nuts when the car moves over, like pushes it up to 4K or more just to get the truck back up the speed I set - seems like overkill to me.

    Thanks

    Joe

It's either not shifting into 6th gear or the torque converter is staying unlocked, I haven't been able to figure it out, but every single one I've ever been in does it while using cruise control. Lightly pressing the gas pedal and letting off while cruise is set will get it to lock the converter/shift. Mine rarely does it when in ECT mode for whatever reason, even at 75 mph. It's really annoying so I drive in ECT mode all the time now.

The adaptive cruise is pretty aggressive getting the truck back up to speed, not really much you can do about that. I've found it works best when set at the shortest distance.

Mine does this ALL the damned time! It drives me nuts!!! I try to drive around 100-105 km/h (60-65mph), the c.c won't drop from 3,000rpm at all. Even with throttle "blips" it drops into 5th/6th for a few seconds then SLAMS down to fourth and holds 3,000rpm again.
Drive 115-120km/h (70-75mph) it'll hold around 2,200-2,500 rpm more often, occasionally dropping below 2,000 rpm on the downhill, but still 3,000+ rpm most of the time.
Only upgrades is a canopy and 265/70r17 Falkens.
Have had the transmission update done the day I bought it. Maybe doing it again will help? Sadly this truck CLEARLY isn't meant for highways and living in western Canada when you need to highway multiple hours to get anywhere, it's deeply upsetting.
Maybe I'll go find a dieselgate Jetta for roadtrips or something.

    Higher octane helps. I think

But for me, 2018 no tsb updates at higher elevations it drives smoother holds gear better. Once I get to lower elevations it start to feel like there Is a big hole in the muffler and dont have the juice for lower rpm

Cruise control has sucked for more than 15 years.

Go with a Manual Tacoma, cruise works great and its quite pleasant to drive on the highway.

I need the longbox AND crew cab for what I use my truck for or else I would have suffered the six to eight month wait for a special ordered manual.

Sounds like the normal gear-hunting that everyone complains about.

I experience the same, I quit using cruise and went from 19mpg to 21mpg same route and basically speed 70mph +\- 2. Really found that if I hold right at 72 on the interstate without cruise I can get about 24 and it’s not constantly shifting between 5th and 6th.

I know this thread is old but this I had the scan gauge tracking temps while this was happening and the transmission gets up towards 204 degrees when sustained 3k rpm range—-definitely seems good to monitor/ keep the Rpms on the lower side for transmission longevity

I was sitting behind an old ford ranger hauling a 40+ foot boat last year. I could hear his engine screaming from a quarter mile away lol

He was moving the boat down the street, he didnt go far. (like maybe 300 feet)

I must have gotten lucky. My cruise control works just fine and I've never experienced the dreaded gear hunting. Did a 60 mile drive a few days ago and RPMs were sitting around 2400 rpm the entire time with cruise control on.

I live in an area with lots of hills, and it will floor it up the hill, then downshift/high rev down to slow me down to maintain CC speed. It's really stupid. I don't bother, unless on a flat road.

It also brakes fairly hard for no reason.

Sometimes on tight 2 lane turns, it picks up the vehicle ahead of me in the next lane and will brake.

Occasionally it will forget to downshift on flat roads and revs a bit high.

No mods that would affect it.

Mine did this when brand new; straight and level highway, ACC would engage, I would go around to pass and it would floor it. Now with about 3000 miles it seems to have mellowed itself out. Its weird.

Man I just drove from Colorado to Oregon and back, and had this exact issue. When km cruise pegged around 87mph, it was often shifting down to 4th or in many cases even 3rd gear, between 3-5k rpm. As another commenter mentioned, you can press the gas a bit and it will shift back to 5th or 6th, but not for long. It's infuriating that it won't stay in 6th when going that fast in cruise.
