    Hi All,
The other day I came along an interesting scene about 5-6 miles back on a rough national forest road. A Jeep had blown out a tire and their spare was flat. Not aired down: flat. And their air pump had failed. No cell reception, rough hike out. Likely many miles on the main road before they got reception. Not a good situation. I stopped and lent them my VIAIR and all ended well.

But this got me thinking: what if I was ever in a tight spot and my VIAIR failed. I am thinking about a back up tire pump. Maybe a manual one. Is that nuts? And if not does anyone have any suggestions for one?

A bicycle pump is not gonna work. It can't produce the needed volume in a week.

Im a cheap bastard, I use a kobalt inflator as my main. It's 50 bucks and super compact. Great little tool, in a pinch.

Crap happens. That doesn’t mean you need two spare tires or two compressors. Just cover your bases and check your gear. Don’t wheel without basic items to ‘get you home’ and don’t wheel alone if you don’t have said items. Also, get a satellite messenger phone or something so cell service isn’t an issue. You can’t just go crazy and carry a back up for every back up. Get the bases covered & live your life. Don’t go buying all the cool gear and skip on the inexpensive basics and you’ll probably be fine.

In other news - nice work helping them out! Truly could have been a dire situation if you didn’t help out depending on how prepared they were and what the weather was like. Nice job! But just learn from it to have the basics covered and again, SATELLITE phone worth its weight in gold.

Thanks. I have to admit they probably would have been OK anyway; it was fair summer mountain weather. Would've just been a pain.

I used a home brewed version of the power tank for years. I had a 12 volt ARB for the locker that could be used as a backup in a pinch, but it was slow AF. The power tank is awesome and pretty much guaranteed to work, if you have CO2. The problem/good thing about CO2 is because it's stored as a liquid there is a huge volume of gas and the pressure remains constant at around 1,100 psi. The when the last of the liquid is used the pressure drops rapidly to zero. Getting it refilled in small towns can be challenging and if you run out it's useless. And, with all of that said, if I was going to get back into off-road it would be one of my first purchases.

Mine is only 5lbs, and I opted to go with that size because I don't have any friends I go off-road with. I'm not rock crawling myself either, but it's nice to give myself a bit more traction and air down and have the means of airing back up.

Here is my friend's 10lb tank that he let me borrow -

That thing convinced me to go with co2 versus an onboard setup such as an ARB.

I hope to alleviate this by weighing the tank and comparing the weight from when it was empty.

A 5lb tank, if I'm not helping others in need along the way, could last me over a year.

You're right about having a difficult time getting it filled up though, fortunately for me there are plenty of places that provide that service.

I blew up a 20.8 x 34 tractor tire with a bicycle pump when I was a teen ager. Only had to get It to 12psi....Took 3 hours. Had to get it aired up in order to get dad's pick up unstuck before he got home and discovered I had it out " wheelin'" .

Just sayin that a AC compressor along with the neccessary modifications and a storage tank can and will easily support 150psi air pressure . Enough to easily run multiple air tools also is much sought after mod with the jeep community

I live in the High Desert near Ft Irwin and MCAGCC 29 Palms and even though my Tacoma has AC and during the warm summers here I've not used my AC

20190703_213226.jpg You can pickup a small 12 volt compressor on Ebay for about $25. They are small but will air you up if your main compressor fails.

If I'm going way out into the sticks, I'll usually bring a second spare tire.

Not that it can't happen but why not go E-range tires with only 1 spare?

10 plys are hard to kill (not impossible, but difficult). Plus they can air way down -
