The only effective way to make the system change to 2wd as soon as you hit the switch, would be to take over the 4wd ECU completely. This would eliminate all the safeguards in the system and be much more complicated to build, so I never pursued it.

It should be buildable, but totally not worth the effort I think...

I was scrolling through the posts to find out info on the rear locker as well. So can you confirm that the locker WILL work in ANY mode with this harness installed? If so, this would appear to be the new “gray wire mod” of sorts that allowed use of the rear locker in ANY mode on the 1st gen trucks, including just regular 2wd mode.

No. The function of the locker does not change.

That said, with the 2LM engaged, you can engage the locker in 2Lo, just like you can in 4Lo.

    As Tony stated.
This is NOT a grey wire mod equivalent. 3rd gen will never have any kind of simple equivalent to that mod, I am 99.9% sure at this point.

Truck 4wd ECU will only lock rear when it thinks it is in 4lo. This mod makes the truck think it is in 4lo even though the front ADD is disconnected on the front diff. So for that reason, you can lock the rear in 2lo just like 4lo. But you are still in low gear, so it isnt like the grey wire mod.

(Rear lock anytime requires removing control from the 4wd ecu completely, and controlling and providing feedback manually yourself. See https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/rear-diff-lock-anytime-mod-3rd-gen-development.537810/)

Since we are talking about the locker and the 2LM, this would be a good time to say that the rear diff, all by itself, will now be seeing the equivalent of 714hp / 681ft-lb (2.57:1). Use the throttle pedal gently when in 2Lo and esp when locked.

Here is what I have for those of you that want to use the illumination circuit. This harness plugs into the cargo lamp switch (if you have one). Even if you don't the plug for it is there to the left of the steering wheel behind the useless cubby. This harness allows you do do a few other things that may or may not be of interest. You can check it out here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-added-lamps-to-cargo-sw.587660/#post-20918693

Basically, it gives you access to the ILL+ (green) and ILL- (tan) wires that are needed to dim your switch LEDs. I just tested this on my truck. You get dimming on both LEDs and it turns on/off with your headlights. This harness will not be PNP, but the wiring is pretty straight forward. I can/will do a write-up, but basically you will cut the ground wire on the PnP harness near the 5 pin switch plug, and attach it to ILL-. The spliced wires on this will be about 24" long. I have this out for quoting now.

If we go with the small switch for the center console, can we tap into the illumination wires of one of those nearby factory switches?

Edit to above... and edited again because I was not thinking..

You actually only need to cut one wire on the 5 pin plug of the PnP harness. You need both ILL+ and ILL-. Pin 4 is the ground and you can cut it about 2" from the plug and connect it to the tan wire (ILL-). You connect ILL+ to pin 2. This will dim both LEDs in the switch as well as turn on/off the text LED with your headlights. The symbol LED works with headlights on and off, but with headlights off, there is no dimming (normal).

You can tap into it anywhere it exists. You only need the ILL- connection. If there is enough interest and I can find the connectors for the OEM switches I could potentially make a splice cable up so there would be no cutting. I would probably be making them to order myself.

4x4 mode switch has it. Looking up the connector now.
    ill.jpg

***Parts on order to make this up*** I have the male/female 5 pin connectors also so I can actually make this PNP if you are mounting your switch in the center console or left of the steering wheel.
