Got a kid on the way in September and will be moving on from my 2004 Access Cab (V6, 4x4, TRD, 126k miles, brand new frame recently installed under warranty) to something bigger with a backseat. Test drove a couple Tundra's last night at a local dealer and they offered me a whopping $4500 for my Tacoma! I couldn't help cracking a smile as I politely declined haha. I'm not sure exactly how much my taco is worth, but i imagine i'll get a decent amount more than that :D.

Thought you all may enjoy that lol

That's pretty standard; most dealerships (if they sell new or few-year old vehicles) don't have a real outlet for getting rid of older vehicles such as our own. For this reason, they can't really gauge the market and give you what people are actually willing to pay.

They'll go to auction, or sold off locally if they have a relationship with neighboring, used car dealers.

The real question is, why even get rid of the truck?

i was told the 'dealer' mechanics or salestaff are the ones that are gonna buy a real clean 1st gen trade in, especially in areas where they are near impossible to find, not in CA for sure lol
they keep wanting my keys every time I hit the lot to inspect the new Corolla hatchback
or else want to get me into a new Tacoma

one guy at the dealer wanted to know what I would sell it for
i said $10k (before I checked resale tables) and he did not bat an eye
... i am figuring too low me thinks...

You're absolutely right, I didn't really expect them to give a super competitive offer - I just spend too much time on TW and know the crazy money that some people are spending on 1st gens nowadays haha.

I honestly wish I could keep it but I have to be able to fit a car seat soon. I could buy a cheaper 4 door sedan but it just doesn't make sense for me to own two vehicles. I'm going to replace it with either a 1st gen double cab or a tundra.

Friend of mine told me when he worked at Toyota, they consistently got 8k to 10k for good frame gen 1’s. With 200k on them.

    I hear ya.

I'd go 1st Gen DC; buy it and swap the mods you want to keep and sell the AC with the 'factory' parts to put on it.

I sold my 02 prerunner with 120K on the meter for 10K in 2016. Prob could have held out for more, but the prerunner market is UT is pretty weak.

That's a pretty reasonable offer for both parties depending on condition.

When I recently went to trade my 2009 Honda Fit with 50k miles (great condition) for my current 2014 Miata they offered me $2k. Talk about insulting. I told them as such and got up to leave--they came up considerably after that.

I did. What's wrong with that? Mainly a commuter/appliance to keep the miles off of the Taco. It got anywhere from 40-43 mpg on the highway, could haul a surprising amount of cargo and in 30k miles never gave me a bit of trouble. Great little cars, I just wanted another Miata and I've got the truck to haul things (I didn't have the truck when I bought the Fit)

Just ribbing you a little, but a Miata?!

    :crapstorm:

LOL I had an NA MX-5 with manual windows, locks, and no power steering.

Wilwood brakes, Jackson racing supercharged, Tokico's all around with Tanabe springs IIRC, that thing was more fun at Laguna Seca than almost any Corvette I owned.

Also keep in mind that trade in values come off the purchase price which saves tax dollars in the total sale of another vehicle on the dealer lot.
Not enough for an extreme low ball offer though.
