SR5 Headlight Upgrade to DRL Headlights DIY

Hi all,

So I picked up a set of DRL headlights to upgrade from the stock SR5 non-DRLs, had to black them out of course lol.

I haven't seen a DIY for this and have also seen tons of questions around what wire is what and where does it go?

So I figured I'd knock this out for everyone.


I made some harnesses to make it all plug and play with the exception of tapping into the power of the headlight wire.

If anyone with an SR5 is interested in doing this, I can make a harness/connector kit for you.

Driver's side wires
Headlight connector: +Red | -White/Black
DRL/Turn Signal connector: - White/Black | +Red (New DRL Wire) | +Brown (Turn signal wire)

Passenger's side wires
Headlight connector: +Blue | -White/Black
DRL/Turn Signal connector: -White/Black | +Blue (New DRL Wire) | +Lt Blue (Turn signal wire)



Wires on the new DRL harness I made: - Black | +High Red | +Low Orange
Wires on the 3-Pin harness I made:
Ground: -Black (I grounded where the current 10mm ground points are for the headlight ground wires. Driver's is next to the battery and passenger's is next to the washer fluid tank)
DRL Hi: That will be your +High wire (Either Red for driver or Blue for passenger side)
Power: +White (This wire will tap into your +Headlight wire)



SR5 Stock 3-Pin DRL/Turn Signal connector to New DRL and New Turn Signal

Some notes here: I popped the white part of the connector forward so I could cleanly, unpin the wires. I then only cut the female pin on the DRL wires and attached a male side so it would go into the new 3-Pin harness I made.

Once I had everything wired, I re-loomed and taped everything back up so that it looked stock




There you go, all done!!!

DRL with turn signal (managed to catch it quick enough)

 

DRL's turn OFF when headlights are selected, does this MOD do that?

 

The DRL's do not turn off when the headlights are turned on, they simply dim.

This is set up to work just like the models above the SR/SR5.

 

Just verified...they don't dim, they just stay ON

 

There you have it . It's a bit of a different setup for the SR/SR5's as the DRL is also the turn signal

 

Alright, so always on and dim while headlights are on? Flash for turn signal at full brightness in both cases?

 

Yes, can be on w/ or w/o headlights. It is said the DRLs dim when you turn on the headlights, but I don't really notice a difference.

The flash for turn signal is full brightness in both cases.

I have an sr5 and I just put switch back bulbs in the amber turn signals, will they still work?

 

Hey,

I'm not 100% positive that your switchback bulbs will still function the same way they are currently.

Might want to see what kind of LED bulb members with DRL headlights are using?

I'll search around as well.

Can I downgrade to sr5 headlights ? I have a 17' TRD ORSB with led strip and can't stand the white light

 

I think you can disable the DRL from the radio? At least you can from the radio on the SR5.

or you can just unplug the DRL harness?

 

Pull the DRL fuse.
