4 months sitting on Dealers Lot. Any concerns?

    There's a 2010 Tacoma that I'm considering. It's been on the dealers lot for nearly 4 months. This is the only 2010 in my area that's close to what I'm looking for (it's either this or order a 2011). My question is are there things to be concerned about since it's been sitting for so long? i.e. water spots on the paint (rain and sun can be very bad), flat spots on the tires, battery, fluids, etc. Also, the invoice price on the truck is $26,654. What would be a fair price to offer?

    Vehicles sit all the time. Odds are, they are keeping the battery up, so you should be good. Take it for a test drive, and check for any vibrations, sputtering, etc.

    4 months is nothing.

    Some 2010 vehicles were produced in the fall of 2009 and have not sold...they have been sitting somewhere.

    Chances are any vehicle on any lot has been moved around by lot jockeys...so battery and tire flat spots are non issue.

    As far as paint goes...cars/trucks are designed to sit outside. Yes a truck sitting for a while may have heavy water spots etc, just have the dealer detail it for you. (although I'd rather do it myself)

    As far as price...I would need more vehicle info to have a comment. And is that 26.6K dealer invoice or msrp?

    Mine was delivered to the dealer in Nov 2005 and I bought it in January of 2007!! I never encountered any problems, and they gave me a great price since it had sat for so long and they wanted to make room for the 07s coming in. It was cheaper than the used 05 I had originally came to look at! :eek:

    I actually bought a truck like that, it was the last '07 they had on the lot, the rest were '08's. I was able to negotiate that into the sale price since it was one model year older. You can probably do the same with this truck. Good luck!

    No problem, just test drive it. Any spots or detailing issues should be resolved before delivering and/or under warranty...inspect the vehicle before you accept delivery!!!

    As far as asking price...go to kbb.com and edmunds.com to find out the actual factory invoice price of the truck and begin negotiating from there. Never negotiate from the sticker MSRP!!!!!! Don't even consider the "invoice" listed on the sticker either, this is inflated and has hold backs for the dealer...go to those websites for real information.

    MSRP=29,705
    Invoice=26,654
    Holdback=594

    There's probably Factory to dealer incentives and Floor Plan fees the dealer receives that one can only guess at.

    So what's a fair price?

    My 2008 was missing in a back lot at another affileate dealer that was hidden like 7 mo before they could never find but eventually did find it. Only issue I had was the stock rugged fails were destroyed from sitting and failed the road force test...

    Strait up no trade-in deal...26 and change. Get as much of the hold back as you can. And watch those "dealer fees"...

    If he gives up the 594 hold back and there are no 399 or 499 dealer fees...you have made a fair deal.

    Is that Invoice from the sticker or from kbb/edmunds? Be certain that is the true factory invoice data from kbb and edmunds, not from the sticker. In addition to items you mentioned, sometimes they pad the number with double "destination fees" and the like. Typically a good rule of thumb is to start negotiating at or a couple hundred above factory invoice...obviously you can play hard ball and start below invoice ;). Also, kbb/edmunds will give their "TMV" and/or data regarding what other people paid. A good final number is within a few hundred dollars of the TMV.

    I just got a new 2010 that was manufactured 12/2009. The only thing I have noticed so far is it doesn't have that new car smell.

    I bought my 2006 that was made in Aug 2006 in March 2007 for $24500 plus TTL.
    It was a SR5 DC w/ tow 4WD & was less expensive than the used ones on the lot like already said here.

    It wouldn't bother me to buy a truck that had been sitting on a dealer lot that long.

    Mine had been sitting on the lot for a while as well and the stock rugged fails were bad and failed the road force test too. They put on new ones and they have run flawlessly for 40,000 so far. I negotiated before test driving the truck and used some other tactics to get them to $27,400 otd. Sticker was $31,200.

    Purchased my 2006 in March 2007. It was the last 06 they had. OTD price was $25,650 for a Prerunner DCLB. Haven't had any problems yet and rounding 70k miles. Just changed the original stock tires at 60k.

    no concern, they are concerned. should take a pretty low price to get it off. it cost them money to sit on the lot... anything over 45 days > sale

    I just bought my 2010 PreRunner after it sat on the lot for 4 months. I was able to get $400 of the dealer holdback and the $750 rebate, so I ended up getting it for $1150 below invoice.

    My advice is to go to the dealer, tell them you're interested, but you need the best possible price. Give them your name and phone number and leave. They will contact you when they want to sell a car.
