A guide to TacomaWorld - How to give and get meaningful information while navigating tomfoolery

Good Morning,

This is intended to be a helpful, if mildly tonuge in cheek, guide for new members of this and other automotive forums. It is my hope that you, the new guy/girl will be able to use this information as a tool to assist you in obtaining solid, accurate information about your truck while simultaneously avoiding common pitfalls, thus achieving forum greatness. Sound good? Ok, let's get started.

Part One - The Five Types of TacomaWorld Forum Members You Will Encounter -

1. The New Guy (this is you)- New Guy is super excited because he just got his truck, wants to Do. All. The. Things. He genuinely wants to learn and so, he asks a lot of questions. He has a difficult time figuring out who is truly being helpful, who is being a smartass and who is yanking his chain just for being new. In his excitement, he is prone to asking questions that many have asked before. He may become frustrated with answers like "search is your friend."

2. The Super Helpful Long Time Member - This guy is awesome. He knows you're new, remembers being new himself and is always willing to answer your questions, point you in the right direction, etc. He may tell you that search is your friend but he will also shoot you a link to what you should have been searching for.

3. The Useless Asshat - This guy...ugh. Usually a long time member with a chip on his shoulder, the Useless Asshat will will always chime in without being of any assistance to anyone. When you, as a New Guy, ask a legitimate question like "How do I get better MPG?", this guy is absolutely guaranteed to reply "Sell the Tacoma and buy a Prius." His answers are always the same, smug and useless. Usually he's 40 and lives in his mom's basement, a fantasy world where he is King. If you call him on his douchebaggery, he will counter with a comment about "post count" (See Post Count in part two below).

4. The Favorite Son - This guy can do no wrong. Everyone is rabidly supportive of him. While he may be any of the types discussed here, one thing is for sure - Disagree with him at your own peril. Everyone will jump on board and flame you until you are a quivering, smoldering shell of your former self, your wretched carcass on display for all ther world to see whilst the other forum members drink the wine of victory from your disembodied skull. Good Times, Good Times.

5. The Wise Old Elf - This guy is a celebrity on the forum for all the right reasons. He's tried everything, knows his rig (and yours) inside and out, he's constantly involved with high level builds or product development. He's the Real Deal. If he answers one of your questions, consider yourself lucky. He doesn't waste his time on topics that aren't interesting to him. His advice is rooted in experience. Read his threads and posts, learn from him, for his is the path of greatness.

Part Two - 3 Types of Dumbassery You Will Have to Navigate -

1. Post Count - When you as a New Guy ask a question or express an opinion, some who disagree will make a comment such as "Only X posts and you think you know something, SMH." Here is the translation: "I have typed more things than you on this forum and so I am very clearly a higher class of human being and know more things than you. How can you know the things when you haven't typed the things? I have typed A LOT OF THINGS, New Guy, and that proves how smart and awesome I am." This doesn't track and is a worthless statement. Post Count is fucking meaningless. What does matter is a member's "Join Date." If someone is active and has been a member for a while, it's likely that they have done a lot of reading and might actually know something. If they've been a member for a long time with a relatively low post count, it may mean that they listen more than they talk. Imagine that.

2. Worthless Answers - These usually come from two perspectives. The first is someone who doesn't know or care about the answer to your question and the second is a long time member who is tired of reading the same New Guy threads over and over but can't bring himself to just skip your thread. He'd rather be a dick. Below are some sample useless answers:
a. Sell it and buy a Prius, Ridgeline, etc.
b. Search is your friend
c. Ugh, this question again?
d. Popcorn Emoji

3. Baiters - Some folks just want to argue. They love the smooth texture of the keys beneath their fingers as the channel all of their rage at life's dissapointments toward you. They are Baiters. Don't let them drag you into a spiral of worthless arguing. You must master the baiters. Once you have learned to master baiting, you will find the forum to be a much more pleasurable experience.

Part Three - Ten Things You Should Know About Your Tacoma -
1. Bigger tires are going to rub without a lift, no matter how many times you ask.
2. Cold Air Intakes add no power.
3. OV Tune really is worth the money.
4. You really can unstall a URD short shift kit from the top without cutting anything.
5. Aftermarket exhausts, they sound terrible!
6. There is no supercharger available for the 3.5 and likely never will be.
7. Do the clutch accumulator delete mod. You'll like it.
8. You need bed stiffeners.
9. Spacer lifts are fine if you're just going for a look. Be honest about your intended use.
10. Your completely stock truck + OV Tune is the fastest it will ever be and gets the best MPG it ever will. As soon as you add bigger tires and weight from accessories, performance and MPG will suffer. There is no way around this. Gearing may help a little but you can't have your cake and eat it too where performance and MPG are concerned.

Most of you are just going to Home Depot for mulch, Costco for toilet paper and Applebee's for a romantic dinner anyways vs. this overlanding marketing bubble.

OK then!

 

You can actually upsize tires without rubbing. Also, OV Tune may be great, but they post a disclaimer that you are required to violate in order to use their product. That makes them a no go for many people including myself.
