OVTune 3.5L Tacoma Supercharger and Twin Turbo Systems

Ooh, if it is indeed for the Tacoma, this is exciting. I'm interested. Plus, it would help keep business from the people who have made it pretty clear that they only want a supercharger, not a turbo.

I agree. I'm sure there will be some power loss down low in comparison to a quick spooling, small to mid size single turbo setup, but it will get bonus points in the simplicity department. I would also assume it'll be less expensive when the dust settles. Like you said, it'll be nice to have some options for all of those interested in FI.

 

I've been very excited to see info as Mat progresses with FI development, especially any specifics on intercooler/piping fitment/location once he releases that info since I've a winch hiding behind my front bumper.

 

Has there been any discussion regarding a top mount?....not sure if there is room. We wouldnt need a large intercooler.

 

I don't believe so. I personally don't like TMICs anyway because of the heatsoak. Although maybe it's less of a concern since we're not racing these trucks and running high boost for extended periods of time. I wouldn't be at any rate. Lol

 

I think the performance of the S/C and the Turbo will both be surprising

Turbos are a better solution for any setup than a supercharger, a supercharger is just easier to install and a little less likely to give you reliability issues. Modern turbos don't have the low end spooling issues that older, less efficient models had, which also allows them to be more reliable. Less resistance to turning means less heat generated in doing so and longer service intervals/life of components. Superchargers have gotten more efficient too, but you can't get around the simple fact that one of them takes power directly away from the engine in order to work while the other uses the natural flow of the engines exhaust to make power

 

I am one who would personally prefer the SC over a turbo on a gasoline truck engine. I have had both in the past and wished I had not made the swap from the Paxton to the turbo for street driving.

 

For the sake of simplicity, I may end up preferring the idea of the s/c as well.

I have a lot to update. Been too busy with R/D.

 

FWIW, I’d choose the simpler solution too, provided it delivered 50+HP at 2k rpm and above. The truck is fine for my daily driver, more power would be nice but isn’t required. For towing however, another 50-75 HP and equivalent torque above 2-2.5k rpm would be delicious.

 

For reference it was on a Mid 90s LT1 swapped 3/4 Chevrolet 4x4. The Paxton just made more reliable power all the time over the twin turbo setup that I swapped over to. Both setups flowed roughly the same CFM both performed well. The turbos just had heat issues on the regular in Texas heat. Supercharged it never had heating issues and still made good power. I can deal with using some power to make power.
