What's the maximum size wheel/tire combo you can run on a stock 1st gen 4wd?

I currently have some cheap Pacer 15x7s with the stock tire size. I'm wanting to get some better quality wheels but don't want to have huge tires. I've large goodyears on it before and with the 4cyl it just adds too much weight.

32's are generally the largest you can go without (minor) modification. Larger than that and you'll need to do a bit depending on the exact combo you choose. Outlined well here: https://adventuretaco.com/what-size-tires-fit-my-lifted-tacoma/

I'm not looking to lift the truck at all, I want to keep it as close to stock as I can. Just looking for better quality wheels, but 15"s are getting harder to find

wheel size doesn't matter. tire size does.

    Did you read the post?

Lift doesn't affect tire size because of the way suspension works...so it applies to you as well. For 15" wheels, find some stock wheels or spares - those are, IMO, the best looking you can get for our trucks.

The amount of lift does affect how much tire will fit, but is limited by other factors (wheel offset, tire width, etc.). For a stock truck you probably won’t fit much over a 32” tire, but you need to pay particular attention to the tire width and wheel offset as that can cause rubbing either on the UCA or when turning.

I'm a huge fan of 15 inch wheels but they are hard to fit/find. I've had luck with 2 different sets of 15x10's with 3.5 backspacing.

My tire size is 35 so you'll have excuse that :benchpress:

Best advice I can give you is to order 1 first if you cannot find them locally. Sux to have to return 5 rims/tires with return shipping

No. This is not correct in most cases - at least as talked about here on TW, and definitely as implied in this thread. There's a lot of disinformation out there, so hoping to clear this up here for future readers.

The amount of lift does not affect how much tire will fit - at least, not through the full range of motion of the suspension. The exception to this is a body lift, which does actually give you more clearance, but few on TW talk of body lifts.

To suggest that a lift allows more tire is to suggest that the driver will not cycle the suspension. Perhaps true around town, but rarely true if the truck is ever taken off-road.

This is covered well in the linked article, with a picture:

I read the article, I'm just not good with knowing what tire size to use if I were to go to 16" wheels.

Let's try to help you out and brake it down for you. You've stated that you want the 'largest size possible' but don't want large tires. Why not make it easy on yourself and just stay at stock rim and tire dimensions? You will have lots of options and guaranteed fitment without cutting.

You can fit just about anything you want under there, just depends on how much work and carnage you're willing to bring to the table. But as the linked article states, just about anything different from stock will need a certain degree of modification. So the question is, how much carnage are you willing to bring?

Just revisiting this, I am looking to swap the current wheels for 2nd Gen 16"x7 wheels with the 2nd Gen stock tire size...will i have an issue with clearance behind the wheel/tire for the suspension? And of course the fender well?
