Spark plug socket.....

...won't fit in the bore! To say I was is an understatement. The engine, 4.0 v6, wasn't cold when I tried to replace them but it wasn't screaming hot either. I had let it sit for about 90 min before I attempted to replace them. The socket would only go in about an inch before it stopped. Anyone else experience this?

 

Nope...find a thin(er) spark plug socket...cheap at harbor freight. You're not torquing it to much, so don't worry about it not being to beefy.

Also make sure it's got a decent insert to hold the plug in...you'll love not having to fish the plug out of the well!

 

^^, I have seen those sockets in different sizes, I had to buy a smaller one to change plugs on Honda cars I used to work on.

 

my 5/8ths craftsman socket with a black rubber plug in it...made for spark plugs, works fine for me. changed plugs in a couple of first and 2nd gens with no prob.

 

this lol. I had to use a pair of long needle nose's to get mine out

 

I hope you didn't drop any metal shavings into the spark plug opening using needle nose pliers..... better to have the right tool for the job, a new engine will end up costing you much more!

 

How would metal shavings get into the engine by pulling out the spark plugs?

Mac Tools sells a thin wall spark plug socket, had to buy one to take them off my motorcycle.

 

Can anyone tell us what the MAXIMUM size should be for this plug socket?... I'd hate to tear everything apart and find out that MY socket does not fit....??

A 5/8 craftsman, mastercraft... spark plug socket will fit just fine. If you try to use a 13/16, the bigger version, it won't go.

 

I meant the outside diameter, not the inside socket size... We gotta use the 5/8" inside socket, but some guys say the outside dia. is important cuz a thick-walled one will not fit...
