I use some 661 knee pads, A few years old but they do the job, mostly of protecting my knees from getting beat up by the frame when I eat shit.

I was looking at knee pads yesterday at REI and they have come along so far since my 661s (maybe 6 years old). The Troy lee designs raid looked pretty beefy to me

Solid gloves and goggles for sure.
Knee pads are personal, some like small and some like long with shin coverage. I’d say if you’re riding flats and your bike park is rough not flowy, go with longer coverage if you can deal with it. Shin burgers suck. But if you get smaller ones, you’ll be able to use them on trail rides as well. I use the POC joint, super comfortable, good protection.
For park, especially if you’re not a seasoned rider, I’d also get elbow pads. Same idea, smaller or longer. But I’d get longer since you don’t typically use elbow pads for trail rides.
Most important, good shoes! If riding flats, bite the bullet and get fivetens. Staying on your pedals is kinda important.

Knee pads and call it a day. Don't look like a Joey in full spartan gear

Won a 6 hour MTB race this past Saturday on the singlespeed. Haven't lost my single track chops and that makes me very happy.

You were riding in the SS category at Crabtree?! Now I'm defintely jealous that I couldn't join you this weekend. My XC singlespeed setup is easily my favorite bike (don't tell the others!)

    Congratulations!

Yeah, but those trails beat the ever-living shit outta my hands and wrists for 9 laps! I seriously submerged both hands in my ice cooler for 5 minutes after that last lap just to get some relief and they're still tight today. Don't usually have that much fatigue on the MTB but I guess since I haven't been racing it as much this year; I shouldn't be too surprised.

Before anyone says it... no, I will not give up my rigid fork... it will be pried from my cramped and locked hands around the grips! :woot:

This is what happened to me the last time I raced singlespeed for 13 hours... or tried to. The good news is that the SS is the only reason I was able to finish my laps without a mechanical -- meanwhile, ALL of the geared bikes died on the trail.

Needless to say, the race ended early... :D

Try some of the larger Ergon grips. I run ODI Rogue grips on most of my bikes, and even jetskis etc so I reflexively put them on everything. I put some cork Ergons on the fatbike since its not made to go fast and loved them.

Then I tried them on the single speed. Now I see that the Rogues have their place, but the Ergon grips are superior in almost every way except how they look. I sort of feel like a dumbass now that I see I could combat hand/arm/wrist pain with a better grip.

    X2 for Ergons fo sho.

I actually don’t mind their aesthetics, but I put them on all my rides immediately.

I used to run Ergon grips exclusively on all my flat bar bikes but switched a few years ago due a significant discount with ESI through my military team. I should probably take a look at them again though, after this last race put me in the pain tank like I haven’t experienced in a long time.
