Hi Brian, welcome to the site. I'm partly in Vegas as I am there half the month. MPG difference for 2wd and 4x4 is minimal. I think Toyota has them rated as 1 mpg more for the 2WD (16/20 vs 17/21) I've been all over the Vegas and never needed 4x4 for anything there, however I go everywhere and especially this year 4x4 was used due to all the rain the West Coast have received and was nice going up the mountains without needing chains.

My suggestion to you is this, since it's not your daily driver and you don't need it right away is to take your time looking for one. The frames should be solid if the truck is local but should inspect anyway. Stay away from 05-06 like others have said due to possible head gasket issues. 2008 in the sport trim is the last year for the mechanical limited slip rear end. 2009 is the beginning of A-Trac for 4x4 Off-Road models. If you can afford 4x4, I suggest you get it over 2WD even if you don't think you'll need it. If you're sticking to 2WD, I suggest to get the Off-Road trim as it has the rear locker. Also try to expand your search as I think there's much more selection over in the LA area.

Yeah I agree with this I have a 2010 and if I had a choice as much as I would keep my 2010 I would move up to a 2014. But my 2010 suits me just fine for right now. Lol. Was in 2012 when they updated these trucks and some of these newer upgrades are pretty nice.

Hey, I am definitely going to keep this truck for a really long time. I would say 9+ years. I have actually been doing all the reading, joining groups, looking for awhile now and I've narrowed down to the 15 year model. I could totally get a 3rd gen even a 2020 but with all the current issues the 3rd Gen is dealing with, I am gonna wait till the truck has been perfected. The 15 has been proven as a solid platform. My plan will be finding one in the Phoenix, Albuquerque, Denver or Dallas area so that I don't have to worry about the rust. But yeah, 2015 it is!!

I don't think you'll have a single issue with a 2015. And I hear you with the 3rd gen. I Just recently almost sold my 2010 for a 2019, and backed out last minute. I spent hours and hours reading the threads on here about various issues with the new truck. I don't want to get rid of my 100% reliable 2nd gen for a truck that has annoying little issues. Good luck with your search.

I have a couple of issues with 2015's. On the pre-runner I had issues with the air injection system when it was new at just 7K miles. Fixed under warranty.

Now on the 4x4 I hear my needle bearing growling. There's a TSB for this but I'm just gonna pull it and replace with the ECGS bushing.

I don't have my 3rd Gen anymore due to the shifting issues.

As a part time weekend off road vehicle I want the best bang for the buck.
    I'm still open to any year 2wd, 4x4, 3.5 or 4.0.

I guess it is up to how much you want to spend. Not a lot of people want to save just a couple of grands to get a 3-4 year old truck, they would just go with a brand new one. The 2nd Gen holds the value incredibly well. A brand new 2019 DCSB OR 4x4 costs around 35k while a 2014-2015 with 25k-36k miles for 30k-32k, in my area.
I personally would go with either 2014 or 2015, simply because these are not 100% perfect but it has less issues that I would need to worry about.
The 3.5L engine just doesn't feel right to me, for some reasons. Even with the MT, 1st gear in and the truck screamed like crazy. I used to drive an 05 MT for almost a month and man it was powerful and smooth.
So at this point, it is really up to you man but I am going for a bone stock 14-15 DCSB OR 4x4 MT or AT doesn't matter.

I'm looking as well for a dclb 4x4. I've found that Southern trucks and south western trucks are priced higher than northern trucks for some reason. Could be the salt/ rust worries. Sounds like you got a good deal though.

For Las Vegas, a 2012 V6 double cab with less than 100k miles sells for over 20k.
    I'm liking the 2012.
I like the 2013 but the 2.7 is only good if I dont pull anything.

where on earth did you find a 15 with that price and mileage? That was hell of a deal. Here in the desert, a 15 SR5 55k MT for $34966 LOL

I bought it at a Toyota dealership in PA. Got them to give me $2500 for a 05 Corolla that was a complete piece of shit too. Went in on a rainy night and left with exactly what I wanted.Screenshot_20190624-132208.jpg

I'm kind'a reluctant to believe this as at trade in value for this truck puts it at $23K-$24K. If you did get it at that price, you made money buying this truck.

The 2500 for the Corolla has nothing to do with the 22.5k price if that's what you are thinking. They didn't even know I had a trade in until we had agreed on a price.
