Theres some good MTB action out there as well! Just have to get off the bike and take a LONG detour sometimes to get around a bison that decided to lay on the trail.

Be sure to give them a wide berth, you definitely don't want to sneak up on one. A trail runner was attacked by one on Frary peak not that long ago.

A buddy of mine and I were discussing bumper laws. Especially now that safety inspections are no longer a thing. All the literature we could find states that the bumper has to be at least 4.5" tall, and be as wide as the track width of the vehicle. (for reference: https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter6A/41-6a-S1632.html)

He argues that so long as the bumper is 4.5" tall at any point, you're good. I said, that it sounds like the entirety of the bumper has to be at least 4.5" tall. So those tube style pre-runner bumpers would be illegal in my view, but legal in his. Does anyone know the correct answer? I'm not gonna be changing my front bumper anytime soon but he is so he's super curious.

If you ask me, most cars on the road have illegal bumpers. The plastic on the outside is just the bumper cover, the bumper bar is never as wide as the width of the track.

Also the reason why I'm not worried about my rear bumper.

Got stuck in mess made by a guy today who literally dumped a load of bricks on I-15. Friendly reminder to always secure your load.

@P.Blackley I'm with you, most people don't know about bumper vs bumper cover. I learned after my wife hit a deer in her Accord :bananadead:

Oh yeah, that is a valid point. I didn't even think about that. That said, I wonder if the literature is meaning bumper cover (which is completely stupid if it does...). I haven't heard of anyone getting pulled over for the bumper problem I'm describing though. Oh well. It's not something I'm concerned with just yet.

I got pulled over for it in my Volkswagen many years ago when I was in highschool, but had a tape measure in my car and proved the cop wrong. I'm pretty sure you wont get pulled over unless your doing something to catch their attention or if they are having a bad day.

That poor car, it will probably never see the road again as I'm pretty sure it's about to break in half.

You can pretty much count on a cop having a bad day at some point. I got pulled over on the east side belt route for not having fender flares on my jeep. A coworker got written up in Sandy because his aftermarket headlights ticked the cop off. He asked his Sandy City cop friend about it and he said it is pretty much to the discretion of the officer. He could have fought the ticket, but the hassle factor, and the no guarantee of winning, made him change his mind.

I've been worried with similar question lately about trailers cause I've been pulling a friend's enclosed 6x8 around and it's not licensed. Utah law is
... but is that dry weight? What if it's loaded? And how do they know how much it weighs? I'm guessing I'm at the mercy of "the discretion of the officer" whether I get pulled over too

I'm not a lawyer but it has to be empty weight. And I might be in trouble because my 5x8 trailer might be over that limit and for the 30 years that I've owned it its never been licensed. I've never had a minute of grief in Utah, but when my son took it to Nevada he got pulled over. Seems they require all trailers to be licensed.

I really like the folks at Paul's 4x4 in Sandy. They've adjusted my coilovers and lined my truck up better than anyone else, ever. Fair pricing too. As far as purchasing parts, I like headstrongoffroad.com.

Maybe a long shot but anybody out there with a tepui ayer that is interested in getting into a nice hardshell tent? I have a James Baroud Evasion I am considering getting rid of. We have a bigger 4 person tent on a trailer to accommodate the family now and dont go on enough trips with just my wife and I to get much use out of the Evasion even though we love it. Its in great shape. The shell has some dings and scratches from normal use but the fabric and interior are in excellent shape. Solar Fan, and built in light work as of our last trip too.

I have thought about selling it outright but wouldn't mind doing some sort of trade for an ayer as a lightweight backup tent I can keep on the truck for solo trips. Mostly interested in the Tepui Ayer as it is one of the lightest, most compact tents out there but I may entertain other options.

I'll be honest, I've thought about it. But I have a class 5 unlimited I need to build.
