How to AVOID the recall work?

So I'm not going to have the damn pedal chopped for the sake Toyota's legal ass. The pedal is not the problem.
Question: how am I going to avoid having it done?

For example: The wife bought a used german this year and last month it was time for maintenance so I brought it in for her. When I picked it up they said "Oh, and we've replaced some pulleys and other things that were on a recall list for ya at no charge." I thanked them for it, but it made me think.

Next time I bring it in for service or a TSB I don't want to pick it up with a chopped pedal. Are they required to do the work now that it's an official recall? Can I decline it? Can they decline to perform maintenance/TSB work on my truck until the recall work has been completed? (Policies/procedures).

 

I've had my 2009 Camry in twice now and each time the service advisor asks if I've had the recalls done and each time I make it very clear that this is NOT to be done and each time he just makes a note on the ticket.
No biggie so far.

 

When i took mine in for a oil change and tire rotation a couple weeks ago
i was pondering the same thing.
So when i was dropping it off, the first thing i did was speak with the service rep.
as we were were going over what the truck was coming in for I said to him:
I received a letter about the gas pedal/floor mat issue
and i dont want my gas pedal cut.
looking surprised that i already knew all about this,
He looked through the paper work assigned to my truck and the recall was already
assigned to my truck to have the work done during this servicing.
He explained to me they would normally just do it and most people dont even notice.
but in addition to cuting the gas pedal,
they were also going to download a brake overide program in the computer.
And he stated he cant do one without doing the other.
So seeing the brake overide sounded like a good idea, i decided to get it done.
But if i didnt want any of it done, i could of refused.
not sure if i would of have to sign anything to document the refusal.

now with that being said.
really dont notice any difference on the gas pedal. took about 1/2 inch off.
Reading about the brake overide, it is very limited when it would actually activate
so all and all, have no problem with getting this one done.

 

I took mine in and the advisor was like, i've never had anyone happy with the pedal/floormat recall, i would just leave it if your not worried about it.

I had mine done yesterday and I didn't like it. It looked weird having such a small pedal, it was hard to find. Maybe if they had put a new one on it wouldn't have looked so bad. You can clearly see that it was cut and grinded down. I just bought a Brake and pedal set from AutoZone. At least the brake over ride was done. They didn't do a thing with the mats. It took 2 1/2 hours to do this including the complimentary wash.

 

From how he was talking, nobody had been happy with it. Its not like the gas pedal is huge to start with.

 

They only do something if you have the all weather mats.
On the Camry they lift the carpet and dig a hole in the padding under the carpet to make an indentation and then have to add some piece to the cut off pedal so it has a stop.
If anything is ever done without my OK there will be a SCENE.

 

If you don't want your pedal cut just tell them you'd rather wait until they can replace it with the new updated version...

 

what about just not taking it to a 'stealer' for service? I'm taking mine to a reputable service
provider and have had no problems. This doesn't
void your warranty if you record that recommended service was done in a timely manner. I remember
telling the 'stealer' that the purchase price of
the Tacoma was the last money of mine that he
would see, and 9,396 miles later it holds true.

 

Yeah, the way I drive my truck is literary with my big toe on the bottom inch of the pedal. It's just the way my foot rests. I can't imagine that working with a smaller pedal.

BTW to avoid recall, in my state dealer needs written permission to perform work so simply don't give them permission to do the work

 

Why does everyone have this notion that they cut your pedal in half or something. You guys are crazy, I got mine done and can't tell and difference visually or otherwise.

 

I guess I could see this being a problem if you had really short legs but its a gas pedal, you should know where to find it. Get it done and be on with your day. Hypothetically, if you refused the work and then miraculously you had an accident and it was because your pedal got stuck under an aftermarket floor mat you figured would never interfere but did because you bought the ones without the locking tab hole and ended up killing someone, a baby, and that baby was the second coming of Christ. How would you feel?

Same, I'm not even sure I've looked actually. I didn't even notice, the truck feels exactly the same as far as I can tell

 

Had it done on Friday. I can't tell the difference. My WT was removed and placed on the back seat. Had the software upgrade as well.
In my opinion, there seems to be a higher chance this shorten pedal would now interfere with the WT. Either way, I'll probably have Toyota replace it with the new OEM pedal when its released. For now, I wanted that new safety upgrade installed in the tacoma. I'm confident driving it, but in the event the inevitable should occur I would be ready. Don't knock it guys. I agree its short, but its not the end of the world. Toyota is just trying to follow through on an official recall. There is a huge difference between a recall and a tsb. In my opinion, there probably shouldn't be, but at least this forum serves the purpose of informing us of the difference. I bet some of you didn't know that the safety software upgrade puts the vehicle in idle while the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal are both applied. I'm not sure of the specifics yet as I haven't read it on Toyota's website. Frankly, I don't want to keep driving it for years to come and not be informed. Safe drivers are informed ones.

That looks horrible! I'm definitely not getting mine done. It looks like they took an entire inch off. Screw that. How can people say that this is unnoticeable?

 

No way im having my taco violated like that, ill get it serviced elsewhere before I let that happen. I dont trust the dealerships as far as I could throw them, I just know they would go ahead and do it even if I expressly told them not to cause it couldnt be un-done if they did. All they do is change the oil n junk anyway right?
