    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

No doubt that's where it comes from but it would be a very interesting calculation to look at:

How many bullshit tickets are issued by Fastrak every year?

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

There are 14.6 million cars registered in the State of CA. Let's say only around 1/3 are in areas where there is fastrak etc. That's around 4.5 million (I'm rounding down). And of those cars only 1/2 are driven daily, putting us at 2.25 million.

Let's say 1% of those 2.25 million cars are ticketed in error. That means 22,500 people potentially have an traffic fine in error... per day.

Let's figure those fines only occur Monday through Friday... 261 days per year. (again, I'm deliberately low balling here)

That's 22,500 times 261... 5,872,500 bullshit tickets issued per year.

If you just figure the 1st time offense $25 penalty... not the fine, or the late fees, or the multiple offense penaties... just the $25 per ticket... it is $146,812,500 per year.

(If you think my numbers are high... they aren't. LA Times reports there are an estimated 12 million trips made on the 91 Freeway, alone, per year. And according to the same article the Orange County Transportation Authority reported collecting approximately $800,000 in error, from Fastrak, in 2012 on Just the 91 freeway.)

And California just raised your gas tax and registration fees because "they need to pay for the roads"

Drive to San Francisco and see if they get me for a Fastrak violation....

    I'm kidding :anonymous:

Actually, my kid will be home for his first leave since he got to his first duty station. So I've got to do something cool.

Oh crap... I actually DO have to drive to SFO on the 4th of July (not kidding, and just realized this)

Who knows where the error is but recognition rates had better be in the 4 or 5 9’s range since they’re writing tickets which might result in your failure to get a license or the state seizing a tax refund.

The thing is, you cannot read the plate on the photo you’re sent as “proof”. Thank goodness, the picture shows a passenger on mine. The operator even said “that’s not even close” meaning the plate was nowhere near mine. I’d hang onto my savings if I were you.

The only way they are getting to you is through the plate identification (or errored identification). How else are they connecting this to you? I get the proof picture doesn't show the plate (this is unfortunate). Here is one article with admissions from fastrak/metro due to plate misreading.

    Some really cool shit

I've already issued an open invitation to all TW members to my house for the 4th. Detonations of pyrotechnics has already begun in the flats of Oakland. Should be a raucous time in the hoods of Oakland.
I have a pretty good view, and far enough away not to become a casualty.

Gonna bbq some beef and pork. And drink some brews.

    Come on down.

I'm guessing they have software that makes a best guess. Guess who gets the ticket? In other words, plate recognition is crude at best. Like I said, 4 or 5 9's should be the standard for accuracy since that seems to be what we're paying for.

I misunderstood you before. I agree, the image recognition software has along way to go. Hopefully they are using all the false identifications to retrain the image recognition models. Doubt it, but ideally they should.
