Looks like a volunteer fireman is going to try to help him out.

Edit: He probably meant Ozark NF. He's also from out of state and may have no idea where he actually is or that there's a town named Ozark.

    Yeah.
If he's really at that spot, that road looks pretty good and seems to be high ground -- unless he's actually on the offshoot that goes north, which shows on the map but looks like nothing is there on satellite photos.

If he’s down at the bottom of Blue Hole Road by the creek then it’ll be a tough recovery.

Makes me consider more and more getting a winch and winch bumper. I would never think my 4wd would go out, but if it did like his did, being stuck in 2wd would make some of these trails and backroads tough, even with something like maxtrax.

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!

    Yeah.
OK, some people are nervous about my stock tires making it through the Colorado trip. Looking at E-rated in 265/75 16. BFG KO2 or Goodyear Duratracs. Leaning Duratrac, and get $80 off on a set of 4, so they are $10 less for a set of 5 (doing the spare as well since it's a different size). Discuss.

I got one from my TWSS last year, works great  A bent heat shield was the rattling I was looking for, took care of that. Everything else is solid.

My last set was Kevlar reinforced Goodyear A/Ts which have a very similiar tread pattern as the KO2. They were great on the road and good on rock. I have pics somewhere of the sidewall folded almost completely in half (18 psi and up against the side of a washout) with no damage to the tire. My only complaint with them was in the mud. They were absolutely terrible in anything deeper than 6 inches. I do not have lockers though and am very light over the rear axle.

No personal experience with the DuraTracs.

My new set (<5k miles) are KM3s. I've only had them on one off road trip but they performed very well, even with open diffs. They are quiet on the road too. The only thing about them is they're a heavier tire but I haven't noticed any reduced braking performance.

    Yeah.
Stock, which is what I am running now, are the Goodyear Adventure AT with Kevlar. I haven't had any issues here in the Ozarks, but they've only seen shallow mud and I can see how they would be not good at all in the deeper stuff. I've seen what looks like old Uniroyal treads going up ledges in Moab, maybe a buggie or something, so these can't be that bad.

TL;DR Toyo OC ATII never let me down for 144k miles, 255/80/17

    Yeah.
Had my eye on those as well, but price is about the same as Duratracs and interweb ratings not quite as good under certain conditions. My tires will see more slow-speed town and trail miles than highway miles.

Have you considered a spare set of wheels with mud terrains for trips like this one, and running the OE setup for daily driving? More cost upfront, but it’s the best of both worlds in the end.

    Yeah.
No, but that would be cool. Mainly because college-age daughters. But also because I only buy stupid shit like new tents that I don't really need, winches, etc. Tires seem kind of pointless. My wife just pointed out that I have a whole set of extra tires in the garage. They are the original 14" wheels with decades-old tires for the '77 Celica she calls the "shelf car" because, well, I kind of use it as a shelf for now. "Why can't you use those?" This is why I get a t-shirt for Father's Day that says, "YOU CAN'T SCARE ME, I HAVE DAUGHTERS!" Some of these conversations are inconceivable.

I used to do this on my Lexus which I aspired to make a track car. It never happened but I did have a set of wheels/tires that looked good and a set that I would switch to if I was going somewhere like the Pig Trail or Tail of the Dragon.

I have a neighbor with a 3 car garage and 3 "shelf cars" (love that term, definitely going to use it). We've lived at our house for 9 years and I don't think I've ever seen him turn a wrench on them. They have so much junk piled on top of them that I can't even tell what they are but I suspect Mustangs because he seems to be a huge Ford fan.

I had an E36 M3 track/street car for a while, and had two sets of wheels as well. Track tires are too expensive to daily with a performance alignment on the vehicle! By doing your daily driving on the OE stuff or some other cheaper rubber you’re wearing out tires that you’d otherwise be throwing away or stacking in the garage. Plus, when deciding on what tires to get, you don’t have to consider everyday comfort/noise. You don’t have to worry about damaging whatever you decide is your “nice” set of wheels when you’re off road either since they’ll be safe at home.
