Talk me out of getting a Canyon

on some models.....not all 10spd are the same, even within Ford & Chevy

 

You could look at it that way. I look at it as GM revealing their true colors to me for nothing more than a little frustration. Way better than buying one of their vehicles and having them screw me over on something big. Now I don't even consider anything from GM or it's spawn.

 

They do but for whatever reason the Canyon and Colorado don’t use them which is odd considering it’s one of their top complaints.

Bumping to post this from Expo. GM later denied the warranty for having a 2100lbs trailer without trailer brakes (owners manual says 2k+ requires trailer brakes) and for having tires that were 1” taller.

Yeah, I'm sure he was just slowly cruising down a fire road when he bent the frame and seemingly damaged the trailer axle as well. There's no possible way that he hucked it and sent the truck or trailer a few feet into the air after hitting a bump too fast. I wonder why the guy didn't post up any paperwork from the dealer/GM? It really gets the noggin joggin...

 

A year or more ago, there was a fella here who either dusted or hydrolocked his Taco engine using some crap AFE filter while rockcrawling in lakes. He went on an endless tirade about some mystery issue with the valves as he towed his Tacoma around to different dealers trying to find one who would agree Toyota put the mud inside his engine at the factory. We never got to see the paperwork in that one either. The thread here got deleted.

Based on that nonsense, I’m amused that not a single other member here, that I know of, has had a similar mysterious catastrophic valve failure on their 3.5L.

My point being, although I think it’s lame that GM frame bent, I try to withhold judgement as I know how it goes down here when a Tacoma has a failure caused by the driver. There’s a good chance it’s just a guy on a GM social-media witch hunt to try to get undeserved warranty. In a selfish way, I almost enjoy the fact that GM denied warranty, as it gives you a pretty good indication that the story is BS.

 

Both valid points. I’ll leave for posterity but after further digging there’s a reason he didn’t show the full picture and just showed the bed/cab/frame.

What confuses me (maybe everybody here) is that you say you want the truck to last you 15 + years yet you seem more concerned about relatively frivolous crap like what speakers it comes with...

The answer is staring you in the face! Your soon-to-be-Taco brothers are stating the obvious. Find the Taco that fits you best and enjoy many years of dependable Taco travels!

 

Okay, but to a large degree past reputation is all a consumer has to go off of.

We don't know for sure if the 3g Tacoma will be every bit as durable and long-lasting as the previous generations.
Nor do we know if the current Colorado will be as problematic and unreliable as the earlier GM models.

Toyota goes to great lengths to ensure its vehicles are reliable, often at the cost of better engine performance or updated tech features. GM, Ford and FCA seem just as focused on vehicle performance/reliability as they do on offering modern features/amenities and "best-in class" bragging rights.

Does that mean the current generation of Colorado is a ticking time-bomb? No, not necessarily. But GM, as well as Ford and FCA, have a lot of ground to cover in order to prove that their current vehicles are just as reliable as Toyota's. And Toyota really has to screw the pooch in order to drive away its current consumer-base. Could either of those things happen? Yes. Are they likely? Highly debatable.

NHSTA and longterm reliability surveys offer decent overviews of how different models and different brands compare in terms of reliability. Historically, the Tacoma has been at the top of the pack. I don't see that changing anytime soon, but in the next 5-10 years we'll know for sure.

 

Yes. An hour on Crutchfield.com and a few hours to install new speaks and thats a non issue.

 

In all honesty its probably the Rav4 replacing the Camry but the cool thing about Toyota is you wouldn't know that and they do them all justice.

 

This is a fun forum and wouldn't be surprised if I do end up with a Tacoma once I find certain aftermarket products for it.

 

I think I found the solution for you. You might need to partner with a vendor. Buy a New Ranger, or a Canyon, and then put a fake 3G Tacoma body kit on it. That way you can have the drivetrain and underpinnings you want, yet still hang with the cool kids at TacomaWorld.

It’s a long-standing tradition in automotive circles, just historically has only served fellas trying to turn their Camaro into a Ferrari. Don’t see why we can’t make a Ridgeline into a Tacoma, or a Tacoma into a Landcruiser. Some 3D printer guy needs to get on this.

 

Turn the Tacoma into the van in the background. Imagine the look of the girl that thinks she's about to get in a shagging wagon.

You should buy both of them.

 

Nothing beats Toyota and Honda build quality. Have a 2000 Civic still that I bought new. No rattles, squeeks, groans, suspension still tight and original.
20 yrs experience running service shops told me the same about yota trucks. Fluid, brakes, tires will be all it needs.
Anything American will be squeeking and rattling by 75k.
