I believe most people cut around the mesh to allow access to the hood release?, someone please correct me if I am wrong or there is a better way:eek:. There are a few 1st gen satoshi build threads that you could search around on to find out what they have done.

I put a grille insert in after i hit a tree and what i had to do is bend the hood release lever so i could get to it. It's pretty easy and it was part of the install instructions. Now i like the more flush satoshi so that way you could build a custom bracket for a light assembly hidden behind the grille. I did this and ended up taking it out due to the fact that i was going a different way with my Taco.

here is the link to how i did it

This is a really old picture so some of things have gone away. If you need any additional info PM me

I just pop the hood and push the latch hook from between the hood edge and top of the grille.

What brand of light bar is this on your truck? I like the fact that it mounts through the lower bumper and does not wrap around underneath.

You can just slide your hand over the top of the grille and push the latch sideways.

I think it looks great on first gen Tacomas
    .
Looks like you used expanded metal, if so good move. It's much cheaper and stronger that the grillcraft insert.

my 2nd gen piece was only 10 bucks at a local metal shop and total Grille build was 40 bucks.

off topic but besides the body model our front ends have an funny resemblance.

I'd rather make it into a project and do it myself. I've had no luck finding a DIY on this forum. Any ideas? Also, could I just walk into a fab shop and show em a pic of this? I don't usually hang out in fab shops so I wouldn't know what to ask about to have this made.

I did do it myself, I just got the piece of expanded sheet metal cut to general size at the metal shop then trimmed it to fit with a grinder at home.

There are several write ups for 2nd gen so there should be at least a couple for the 1st gen trucks.

Materials aren't hard to come by either. I got everything I needed from lowe's and autozone.

these are the things I used:

    Painters tape
    Exacto knife
    grinder
    800 and 1000 grit sandpaper
    filling putty
    primer
    black paint
    5x1/4 bolts
    1/4 nuts
    epoxy putty

I have a Satoshi grill!!:D Look at my pics. And Im kinda confused on what people are talking about the hood latch being a problem:confused: The mesh does not effect the operation or access to the latch what so ever. The latch is located between the hood and the TOP section of the grill not the middle where the mesh is.
