Did this in my living room a couple years ago and finally got around to doing it in the master bedroom. Removed popcorn ceiling, retexture, paint, and added recessed lights without attic access (had to make access holes between ceiling joists just to run electrical)

Greenly makes long flexible drill bits which you can use to run electrical through joists. Using the long bits can limit or eliminate the need to cut access holes in the ceiling.

Yea there's a couple of different options that do similar. They work well, sometimes. I think the price tag would justify it if it worked a lot more efficiently. Also, those are great for maybe one joist, but I had to drill through multiple joists and the more joists those things have to work through, the greater the margin of error.

I didn't take much pictures of the process (I did more IG video stories), but here's a screenshot of what I was working with

    Very true.

Also, at least around here, it seems once the joists have been in a house for 20 years, they petrify. Some of them are like drilling through concrete.

Pops and I repurposed an old door from their house (built in 1790) to fix one of the benches on the old front entry. Came out awesome!

And done. We liked the unfinished look so we kept it. Probably coat it with some urethane soon.

So true! I have to always use my corded drill for drilling in the joists and studs in my house

Thanks man! Nope, there was a cutout in the trim on the wall side about an inch deep so used the existing gap.

Not sure on color yet, we may just polyurethane since we both dug the unfinished look, and because it looks as though they are pretty much the same wood. Maybe white in the future though?

We also beveled the edges, which was an awesome detail. No more scraping yourself when sitting down/standing up.

Lots of honey-do tasks today. I added to her list tho.

House going on the market in a month so lots of little tasks to do and little cosmetic things I want to fix before someone points them out during an inspection.
Last house sale someone complained about the windows being dirty (it was raining during their inspection) and wanted it fixed before closing. I was like wtf...seriously?

Fortunately only a lot of minor things. Paint touch up here. Re-caulk there. Re-distribute the rock in the yard to cover up bare spots. Those kinda things.

Got woken up a little after 2 because somebody had a headache so bad she was crying and I realized that it was so hot that I had been tossing and turning consciously but hadn’t really woken up. I walk downstairs and check the AC and it’s 75*, set at 68, fuck.
Pull the air handler filter and peer up under it and this was the beautiful treat.

Fuck ice, I just want to get some sleep which is tough to do if it’s over 72*.

One word describes Little Giant... Heavy! But the articulation works well and it is a sturdy ladder.

I bought the Lowe’s brand, I don’t think it’s a Werner but might be, goes up to 17’. Was about $120 on Black Friday last year. Heavy but handy.

Edit: It is a Werner brand. Very handy on steps.

If you go regular extension ladder and fiberglass, in my experience they flex a lot less and make me feel a lot more comfortable when at heights. It could also be that my ladder is a ~28 ft type IA so its rated for like 300#. Remember, its not just how much you weigh, but you plus gear and building supplies that might go up with you.

Have you looked at the Little Giant type ladder at Harbor Freight? It extends to 17 feet.

    probably not a bad idea.

I would look into a service/replacement but we close on the new house in 11 days.
Fun fact, we accompanied the home inspector for the inspection yesterday and the unit at the new house is half a ton undersized. The outside unit is from 05 and the air handler is from '89, if the outside unit goes (or we decide to upgrade) we have to replace the whole system because of the High/Low pressure change.
