I have owned my Taco for less than 3 weeks so I am still trying to figure things out.

What does "ride the starter out of a jam " mean? I was thinking that the Clutch Cancel Switch was for starting the engine when parked on a hill so you can have your left foot on the brake instead of the clutch peddle. OTOH that is what the E-brake and neutral are for, so I don't ever see myself using a clutch start, unless I don't feel like depressing the clutch pedal to start, and just use the cancel button with the trans in neutral....I just don't get it.

One of the reasons I bought my Tacoma was that it had a "normal" key. Absolutely hate those key fobs and push buttons.

There are quite a few MT's with smart key and push button start. From Toyota and other manufacturers.

Depends on the car I suppose. I can push start my Lexus. The ignition has the same functions as with a key. Off -> Acc -> On -> Start (Always available). Need to be in the On position, then push, pop clutch, car started. Different cars may be different though.

Toyota definitely could have offered smart key on MT Tacomas, with or without the clutch start cancel button, it really doesn't matter. You would just push the start button instead of turning the key to ride the starter. Of course it would mean a bit of a different circuit setup, because on the smart key-equipped Tacomas, the ECU determines how long to run the starter by monitoring engine speed. Most other Toyotas without smart key do the exact same thing, but for the Tacoma they stuck with a conventional system along with the clutch start cancel switch. Easiest way to go, really. Still, clutch start cancel could easily be setup to override not just the clutch portion, but also the starter logic to allow it to be run as long as the switch is held or similar.

Toyota has a history of offering manual transmissions with less and less appealing option packages. It will only get worse until manuals aren't available at all. Ah well.

Dang what a bunch of Luddites you all are. Keys are SO 20th century.

I dumped my 2014 Taco largely due to its archaic 1980s interior which included an ignition key! I wanted 21st century things like BSM, proximity unlocking, and... wait for it... a "miles to empty" readout!

I passed on the manual 2017 Taco precisely because it had a key. ME GETTING IN THE MANUAL TACO FOR A TEST DRIVE: "WTF? A key? Hard pass, show me the automatic."

My Mustang has a key and is manual. If there was some way for me to retrofit the S550 proximity key to mine I'd be all over that. Sadly, it's not possible.

Leave keys with the buggy whips, rotary dial phones, VHS tapes and box TVs!

It’s pretty convenient to never take my keys out of my pocket, whether it’s driving my truck or riding my motorcycle. Not a deal breaker if it had a key but it’s certainly nice.

It's surprising how quickly you get used to either way. Haven't driven my Lexus in a few months and been stuck with a key. Don't even think about it.

To use push button start you have to step on the brake, to start the manual you have to depress the clutch. If your truck likes a little throttle like mine, you need a third leg, or be quite gifted.

Cars that have push button start with a manual transmission use the clutch pedal to start the car, you don't have to touch the brake.

I'm totally happy with my 5 speed manual transmission and key.
People are acting like having to use a key is like starting the truck with a crank.

I agree the key is best, simple and fancy fail safe, just the way it should be.

I love the fact that my truck came with an actual key. Not a huge fan of all this smart key shit, everything is too smart nowdays anyway as it is.

    Work in progress...
A person that wants to shift their own gears probably enjoys turning the key to start their own truck, I am thinking.

    This is true.
Now get off my lawn smart boy!

J/k...but yeah, I love having a key. I bet there aren't too many modern car thieves who know how to hotwire a car. There are plenty who can pull the signal off someone's keyless fob sitting on the counter in their kitchen from the front door. They are much less secure than a key.

Also, push button start is NOT innovative and moderne. These button start fanboys tossing around the term "luddite" are fucking touting the incredibly innovative and cutting edge starting technology of the 1950s John Deere upon which I grew up mowing orchards.

Hahahahaha bet your John Deere had proximity door locks, collision avoidance, ABS, and auto high beams too!

Can't you pretty much just jam a screwdriver in the ignition and turn it to steal a car, or is that not the case these days?

    It sure as fuck did.

Well, it had all that other stuff inside my incredibly effective and especially brilliant and coordinated cortex.

It didn't have doors or locks. It was an orchard tractor, numbnuts

    I don't know if it's that easy.
I don't think I'll test that one out on mine though....
