You might know this, but if you are going to haul just a few boards, be sure to wrap your straps around them a couple times aft of the anchor points. This will cinch them, keep them tensioned in place against the front wall, and will be a lot better than just having the strap pass over top of them.

Two straps, cinched, with your tailgate down will probably do it. I'd keep it to back roads and have a spotter with you.

Basically the same set up the designers did on the Jeep Gladiator. Well done...

Yep good call on that, I've found that putting a twist or two in the strap when you come around the boards really helps too with it sliding side to side.

If in the airstream, that twist will also keep the straps from vibrating.

Get an extender that goes in the tow hitch, this allows me to carry long items with a short bed.

Thanks to @RichVT for this awesome idea.

Talk about simple. I didnt haul a ton of wood but the two 4x8 sheets of maple rested nice and flat on the two bed cross supports and raised tailgate with his method. No doubt it could support alot more weight if needed.

For about 10 bucks worth of hardware amd a half hour of my time, this is one of the most efficient mods on my truck, and the cheapest.

I've carried 7 sheets of 3/4" Advantec (a heavy OSB) with no problem.

Nice. I have the same HF extender. What did you do to it to fit it for 4x8 sheets?

I cut some length off the tube that goes into the receiver and drilled a new hole. Also added the 2x3s on top to match the height of the supports in the bed.

It comes from the mfr with a reinforcing bar inside the main beam at the receiver end. Did you reinforce too or not?

Friggin' outsized shipping crates. We could have used 4x8, but it would have taken 50% more sheets.

    No need to be sorry!

We are a aircraft seat company and are displaying our seats at a trade show in Germany. The seat dimensions are about 58.9in wide x 46.56in tall, plus another 2.0in of height for the display floor that is part of the crate and will be 32.0in long each. That makes crates of about 34.50in long x 64.50in wide x 54.50in tall with some clearance.

With standard sheets, we would be wasting at least half of the material.

That said, 4x8s were $14.22 at Lowes. I was happy when the guy quoted me $22 for the 4x10s over the phone (not Lowes or HomeDepot). Well that was a mistake, he quoted their 4x8s. 4x10s were $40. :frusty: At least he gave me two free after he realized that he incorrectly rung me up for 10 instead of 12.

Still, these three crates in total will be less than just one of the crates a guy here bought from U-Line that didn't fit the seats at all.

I've never built an exhibition display or an ocean freight crate before. :woot:

Very nice! I work in aero as well. Hope the exhibition goes well, and that your crate survives the ocean! (I'm sure it will).

I always hated making 4x10 sheets, though the really crappy stuff was 5x10! Only laid that up a couple times, but it was memorable apparently.
