So basically only about a 1 month reliable time frame to explore those areas, amazing! I'll take it.

Nothing to be taken for granted, we can't even use our public land here for vehicle access, they shut it all down in the late 90's.

I made this equal in scale graphic a couple years ago. We have alot of public land but it's locked down for any off highway use. You all have 6X as much and it's all open weather permitting.

 

Any advice or help you can offer would be gladly accepted.

Here is my tentative routes (dates no longer valid). I plan to modify, reroute, detour, or backtrack as necessary.




2 years ago I did this route on my motorcycle, all asphalt. What I saw motivated me to build my rig and plan this current trip.

So I had asked a few questions about header installation here a few weeks ago, so I figured I’d give a little update.

I did get the headers installed and then had the really obvious fix of making sure all O2 sensors were actually plugged in so I didn’t get any more check engine light...

At that point I was happy with what I had but not exactly blown away either. I had an AFE intake, Gibson catback and now URD headers. Definitely a little more pep than stock, but nothing crazy. My plan the whole time was to finish it all off eventually with the URD MAF calibrator after hearing far more good things than bad about it.

My idea of “waiting” to get the calibrator ended up being about 3 weeks. Well, a not so happy wife and a little lighter wallet later, I ordered the calibrator.

I just installed it last night and my initial impression is that it’s definitely the missing piece to the whole setup. It’s hard to describe it exactly but it absolutely ties it all together and you can actually feel a noticeable improvement in power and driveability. It’s just smoother overall, throttle response is more immediate, and when I get up above 3,000rpm, it’s a very noticeable gain over stock. We’ll see what the long term feel is and hopefully I even see that small increase in mpg’s I’ve heard a lot of people see.

Definitely glad I did it, because up until that point I wouldn’t say I regretted the other things I had done, but I wasn’t overly excited about them either. This last piece makes it all feel a little more worthwhile.

 

In Great Falls for work, saw a gray 2nd Gen w/ a GFC on it the other day, somebody who is probably on here... Those campers are pretty nice

I thought he was going to say he installed the exhaust in preparation for a supercharger not a calibrator.

 

My dad did the calibrator with the URD TruCAI. Was meh. Now has a blower, smaller pulley, exhaust, same CAI, 4.56s, weighs too much. And it still rips.

 

I’d take that setup too!

It’s obviously no blower and I won’t be winning any drag races, but I’m happy with the whole setup. It’s without a doubt quicker than stock.

We tow our camper from Billings to the Ennis area every summer for a big camping trip. That will be the true test to the stuff I’ve done. The last 4 years I’ve done it with a completely stock (engine wise) 4Runner, so I know how it handles the hills and the trip as a whole. Now in a couple of weeks when we do it I’ll have all of these new goodies on it, I’m anticipating it pulling up some of those hills a little stronger this year.

I know my dad first got the blower to try and not down shift as much pulling hills. Was disappointed it didn't. regearing was the key there like I told him..haha

 

Yea that’s on my wish list. Go up to a 33” tire and either 4.30’s or 4.56’s.
I have 32’s right now with the stock 3.73’s.

Instantly. Most likely. There's a lot of dead timber up in these parts that nobody is allowed to log. The last 3 summers haven't been very good so far as fire season goes.

@MTgirl and I were up MacGruder a couple summers ago. Even from the peaks/firewatch towers you couldn't see very far due to smoke season. Also keep in mind there's zero cell or HAM radio coverage on the trail.

 

This is why we can't have nice things. People suck sometimes.

 

I noticed this last night. WTF? That stretch of road is ONE year old.
