My truck started making this noise earlier in the summer, but lately it's been quiet. I haven't got a clue why. If it starts making the noise on a regular basis, Ill see if the Toyota dealer can do something about it. Until then I'll just drive it.

I have the same noise. If you press in the clutch it goes away, and is very loud with the AC on. I go to the dealer on Thursday for my 5000 mile service and will have them check this noise.

Actually I have the same sound and it is the A/C compressor cutting on and off. I have turned off the A/C and let the truck idle and no noise what so ever. Turn the A/C back on and it comes back.

Yeah... and if you turn the A/C on and get the noise... and you then push in your clutch, the noise goes away. Let out the clutch and it comes back. IT'S IN THE TRANSMISSION... It's nothing to do with the A/C. The A/C compressor just puts enough load on the engine to exacerbate the problem in the transmission. The noise is still there when the A/C is off... it's just much less pronounced. I think it's just too much play in the output shaft in the transmission. It's probably not hurting anything, but I don't like it. Mine's going back to the dealer before my warranty expires.

Finally. . .a thread that addresses my issue. My 2007 5 speed 4x4 does this all the time. MUCH worse with the a/c on. The only thing I noticed is that it appears even louder when it is really hot and the a/c is working harder. It is good to know I am not insane. I am going in to Toyota on Thursday.

In a manual transmission, there's an input shaft and counter shaft(s). The gears on these shafts are in mesh all the time. Synchros and sliding gears change the gear ratio. The noise they make is from them meshing without a load. The amount of noise is related to how well the trans is set up and the type and condition of the teeth on the gears. Straight cut gears are noisy, helical cuts are quieter, but cause more thrust.
The noise is normal. If it doesn't get very loud, or you don't find lots of metal in the gear oil, ignore it.

Sounds like there are a whole lot of Toyota 5-speed transmissions out there that weren't set up well then. I've driven a lot of manual transmissions in my time - everything from econo-boxes to 6-wheel dump trucks - and I've never heard one that sounded like this. I don't think it's normal at all (though I have no doubt that the dealership will try to say it is). My guess is it's yet another Toyota quality lapse.

Yesterday I listened to another 4 cylinder with 100K on it. It made the noise. The guy who owned it wears hearing aids and never noticed it in all that time. With that said, I went to DCH Wappingers Toyota this morning. I left the car running with the A/C on while waiting. I wanted to make sure it was making the noise. The tech heard it immediately. It was particularly LOUD this morning. The tech said it was definitely NOT normal. He thought throwout bearing, but really needed to look in the bell housing. He had the service manager listen as well. He agreed the noise was loud and not normal. I go back in 12 days for them to drop the transmission. I will keep you posted. From what I've read here, I think the throwout bearing is the wrong initial diganoses. We'll see.

Please post a recording of the noise, so we're all on the same page.

I am a technological moron. I cannot post this noise. I will say it is THE noise that is generally being addressed in this thread. When the truck is in neutral and sitting at idle you can hear a VERY slight rattle noise from the bellhousing. When the air conditioner is on and the compressor cylcles on (thus affecting rpm) the noise gets noticably louder and creates what can be best described as a "diesel sound." When the clutch is pushed in the noise goes away! I hope this helps.

yup, my 2010 4x4 same noise from 1000 or so miles. should be a recall issue with this many people having the same problem.

I didn't have the noise until about 15,000 miles on the Tacoma. Have 26,000 now and still have noise. As everyone said previously I only seem to have the noise(louder) with the A/C on:facepalm::confused:. Sometimes it almost sounds like an exhaust leak but that would have nothing to do with the noise going away when depressing the clutch. After reading all the posts, it seems the problem lies in the trans. Maybe we should send Toyota this thread!

noise was really loud yesterday on mine. I really only run the a/c when i have to. It does sound like a diesel until you press the clutch in. 2007 w/ 24k miles :( and to put it frankly, sounds like $hit

This is at least one time when Old School is better as most of the older US truck transmissions used cast iron as a case material which provided much better sound proofing. The aluminum cases used today transfer noise much more readily. The noise is gear rattle and when you push the clutch in, it pre-loads everything to lessen it. My understanding is this is the same trans as used in Chevy Colorados.......

Do you find it interesting, that Toyota no longer sells the 4 cylinder-5 speed manual combination, on the 2010 5-lug or Prerunner. At least not in my neck of the woods.

Could it be that they have had too many complaints on the weak clutch, and the diesel like noise issues? Makes me wonder.

I think it's more of a regional district difference as there are combo's I could never get in Michigan also, such as a 2WD Access Cab w/ 5speed manual. Go figure. One of my local dealers has a 2011 Reg. Cab 5 lug w/ 5 speed manual......

well there are a crap load of them in so-cal. i picked mine up with 17k miles for under 15k. 2wd, access, 5 lug. For the money, i couldnt be happier. It does what i need it to do. the diesel noise sounds like crap though.
