can you fit a 6ft ladder in the back (without hanging over the edge or gate down?)
I have never been up close and personal with a 1st gen DC before, I see the newer DCs on the road and shake my head like Im not going to fit much into the back of that bed and use it as just a truck!!

I have to agree. My brother has a 2014 DC but every time he needs something long moved we have to use my 1st gen because of the bed length and because I have a head rack.

You can not. The 1st gen DC have short beds, 5ft.

I believe 2nd or 3rd gen DC you have the option to opt for a SB or LB? I could be wrong though.

    4 run, 2 don't
Nope, 1st gens aren't worth anything...don't even bother.

Having said that, if anyone needs help disposing of one, I'll be happy to help!

Great posting Paul. I totally agree. I remember this 1st gen always had a special appeal and following. Although the 2nd gen T-bird far outsold the 1st gen, there is no comparison when it comes to price and identity.

    I have a 1st gen with 165k miles that i wouldn't sell for less than 9k...why?

Bc my wife bitches that I take better care of ole whistlepig than her, but whistlepig doesn't leave me in any binds. She takes me to the damn mcdonalds at 2 a.m. when wife won't...and she'll bring me home with hot fries. No bitchin. She'll wake up 2 hours later to go fishing and guess what...no bitchin'

Get a damn 1st gen with a good frame that hasnt been shit all over and you will not regret it.

Damn. I enjoy my first gen, but if someone offered me 10K$ for it I'd say yes & throw in the trailer. That's new plumbing or 1/3 new wiring for the house. (But the Roof Top Tent would be extra - LOL)

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
No, 1st gens are not worth what people pay for them, now. I've had many of them. My last sold one I picked up from original owner, actually was my company truck. It was an 99 4x4 2.7 bucket seat, no rust no accidents truck. I paid $1200, drove until it had 365k on it. Sold it for $4800 to buy my 03 dbcb because I started to haul grand kids around and needed more seats. I bought my current and probably last 1st gen 3 years ago for $8800 with 117k on it. I say my last because I doubt I could find a nicer, newer 1st gen for a reasonable price that I would pay for a 15 year old truck. I'd really like to have a newer Tacoma, but I don't care for the 2/3rd gens. They don't make then like they used to!

To Paul's point and just thinking about the plight of our little trucks and how they remind me of the early Thunderbird. Here are some pictures that some members may remember the evolution that happened in less than 15 years.

A two-seater lightweight runabout built from existing parts on a short but tough frame with leaf springs. Built to target a specific sports car market.

Add rear seating as a coupe, albeit a bit close for adult passengers, keep leaf springs, and more engine. Bigger is better. More in the personal luxury space that started in 1956 with the MKII.

It's hard to believe that in 10 years the T-bird grew from a little 2 seater to this monster 4-door luxury saloon complete with Landau coach hardware.

I remember when these bloated rolling land yachts had no resale value. Too many gadgets to maintain. As the vacuum lines started to deteriorate, these cars became rolling nightmares -- just like their Lincoln counterparts.

$22k for an “Overland” ready 1st gen Tacoma DC. Open for a good debate.

This truck has been for sale for awhile. Now I don’t doubt it doesn’t have over $22k worth of stuff, maybe not. I think one would rather purchase one with a close to stock configuration and go from there. Building up a truck to me is part of the fun and experience. You also get to build it the way you like. You know what has been done to it and how it was done. All this would make the truck an extension of you and vs verse. It would feel more like it’s your when you put a lot of time, thought, and money into it.

So is this truck worth the $22k for you?

Yes, If I were to buy another of this type(Tacoma/4Runner) it would probably be a 4Runner because of the overpriced trucks. And less frame issues on 4Runner.

Good deals exist they just disappear literally 1-2 hours after getting posted. If you're only checking craigslist once per day you're going to have a bad time.
