Yakima Rails on Bed Rails

My goal is to have a cover over my truck bed (Access or Truxedo)....the type that velcros and rolls, then mount these Yakima rails to the tops of the truck sides. Anyone done this? Anyone put bolts/screws through the plastic/metal top surface of the bed? What does the metal look like under the plastic? Are there stake holes? Is there access to the underside for a nut/washer? Any additional advice/thoughts on how to achieve this. I think I'll have to space the rails up a few inches so the rolling of the cover will fit under the cross bars.

 

I was just dismantling my bed rail caps today, but for a different reason. Just FYI here's something that may help you.

To take off the bed rail caps, you have to remove the Torx (size T30) bolts located inside the C-channel rails... and the heads strip out pretty easy. I ended up having to remove a couple of the heads with a drill. Then I turned them out from the back by popping out those cubby hole boxes and reaching up into the fender. I went to the hardware store and replaced all the Torx bolts with Allen head bolts...the size is M6 x 1.00.

After that, there's 2 hex head bolts (10mm IIRC) right next to the tailgate. Finally, there's one of those plastic rivets at each end of the bed.

After all that hardware is removed you can pop the bed rail off and have a look under it. I think there was metal under there but I didn't take the whole thing off as I was working on the C channel rails. If you were to mount something on top of the bedrails, I think it would be possible to reach through the cubby holes and hold back on a nut with your fingers or maybe even a wrench.

Actually you know what I may be wrong about having to remove those Torx bolts...you may just have to remove the hex head bolts and the plastic rivets if you're just taking off the bed rail cap.

 

If the Yakima rail is 60" long, do you think you could reach to each end of it from the cubby hole? I'm thinkin it's too far??

 

There's the big one near the tailgate (the one w/ the door) then the little one nearest the cab...between those 2, you should be able to reach along the entire bed rail unless you've got short arms like a T-Rex.

 

I think this is what you're looking for with the exception that its not a velcro cover, but it does roll up. The rack system is on a track like the one pictured above.

That is exactly what I want to do with mine! I think its as simple as taking the mounts you would use for camper shells and drilling/screwing them into the caps on side of the bed. I want to be able to have my roll up tonneau cover closed and have the rack with bikes, etc. mounted above it.
