Can I use a paint touch up pen on this?

Scratch in my fender that I got like my first month of having the truck. It’s pretty deep but not to bare metal. It’s been there almost 2 years and just don’t like seeing it.

Can I use one of the paint touch up pens from the dealer for this? Are they hard to use?

 

Yes you can and no they are not hard to use, however they will not make it seamless, just better.

 

Use really light coats and let it dry between, don't try to cover it all at once. Buff it when done and it will be a lot better.

 

You could try buffing it out first? A lot of should disappear to the point where you don't notice it.

This thing has saved my bacon a few times now: After watching a few YouTube videos, I had it down. Fixed pinstriping on the Taco and a bunch of door dings and scrapes on the wife's car. The dents don't go away but are half as noticeable.

 

It seems pretty wide and deep for buffing to have much effect. Also forgive my ignorance wouldn’t the buffing go out after some washes and need to be redone with some compound?

 

Agreed, but if you lived with it this long, knocking down the edges and the light scratches on both ends might cure it for you?

No. You are buffing the clear coat, so the effect will not fade. I stayed away from polisher discussions for many years but getting pinstripes on the Taco made me try it out and made me a believer. Some of the other stuff that I fixed has been crazy. I am upset that I didn't take before an after pics.

 

Do not use the pen or brush that comes with factory paint ... use this

and fill the reservoir with the factory paint. You can youtube howto's using the fine line pen ... this gives you much more control and is what the pros use to do it right.

Definitely light wet sand and buff first. Thatll get the light surface scratch out and get the gash down in size a little bit. Touch up after. Probably will need two or three passes with touch up.

If you wanna do the touch up correctly, grab one of these well pens and get touch up from the dealer corresponding to your paint code.

Just a list of what I have done:

-- Pinstripes on the Taco - completely gone until I made more
-- Door dings and gym bag marks on both sides of wife's Forester - completely gone except for the actual denting
-- A scratch on the hood of the Forester from a can of corn that I dropped on it - completely gone
-- Wife tagged a car in a parking lot with a rental Grand Caravan - completely fixed the bumper and buffed out 75% of scrape on the headlight (she stayed and talked with the owner of the other car!)
-- Wife peeled half the bumper off of the Forester on the garage threshold - completely fixed
-- My motorcycle fell into the rear bumper on the Forester - completely gone except for some impressions in the plastic
-- Bumped a shelf with the top of the Taco grille surround - 90% fixed

It's been a fun year or so!

 

buff, then use pen, buff again. and hope for the best, It'll get better but not as it used to be.

I've got one of these and while it works great for filling small stone chips, not really for scratches. Buffing is not the answer either, too deep. If you really want it fixed, take it to a good paint repair shop.

 

Looks like OP's Tacoma is Silver Sky Metalic, if so forget about Dr Color Chip. I purchased their Silver Sky Metallic a couple weeks ago to to fill a tiny store chip and it wasn't even close to a match.
My above painting reservoir pen worked GREAT though.

 

ide say wet sand and polish but if you haven't done it before then maybe not, its pretty easy to burn through the clear if your not careful.

 

You are right, no job for an amateur. I may be wrong but from the photo, looks as though he's already through the clear.

 

It really isn't that hard. I'm pretty hamfisted and had zero issues from my first time out.

Every time I read something like this, I kick myself for not doing before and after shots.
