    Hi,

Maybe it's been covered before but I searched and couldn't fina a thread.

My 2000 TRD 4x4 3.4L has 98k and 5k ago I had the timing belt, water pump, and the other belts changed. Basically the 90k servicing.

Now, 5k miles later I have developed a tapping that occurs only when I idle after driving 5+ miles. But the engine has no change in performance whatsoever and if I increase the tach on the engine (slowly) the tapping quickens then goes away.

New garage I went to for oil change says it may be the timing belt tensioner. Is there any other characteristics that would point in that direction? I hate to have to get the engine ripped apart again. And I don't think the timing belt work is still under a warranty.

Any advice...?? Hopefully it's some simple mechanical interference that won't affect anything..?? I'm sure it could be anything and I probably haven't described it well enough for a quick answer but what may be good is that there is no other performance issue with the engine at any speed.

Thanks in advance for any help,
    --Bill

    Thanks for the replies guys...

@FU_FJ....Can you give me some more info about this Toyota Tick thing?? Others have had it without problems? How common is it?
    @jrallan26..

No I never did have valves adjusted...never came up before as routine maintenance. I guess now may be the time then???

it seems to be a fairly common thing... some say its not the engine/valves that are ticking but something to do with the emmission controls... others say its the lifters... i donno, but a ticking Toy V6 isn't something to get all excited about. My 230k mile V6 4Runner had the tick from day one.\

    **Edit***
You can always take it into a Toyota service center and have them check it out... which may not be a bad idea since you recenly did work on it.

    Thanks guys...

I bought some Marvel Mystery Oil to try once I burn off a quart. The tapping is very very unpredictable and doesn't occur often. So I like the idea of leaving it alone and I also like the idea of taking it into Toyota for a look...hopefully it'll repeat when I get it there! Let them check the valve noises for me then.

    Thanks again,

I would have a tech. have a look at it. It may be in need of a valve adjustment.

Has the timing belt been replaced? Water pump?

i actualy saw a thread on this yesterday, i think it was on toyotanation. I will try and find it later and put on here for yall, its nothing to worry about though. under your engine cover, its hard to explain withou8t the pics, but there is a small valve/bolt you can take out and put a couple O rings on it and it is suppose to quite it way down.
