Hi all to start I just want to thank all the awesome folks here on Tacomaworld. I've been coming here for info since getting my truck in 2011, and you guys have never failed to deliver. 20190624_081046.jpg 20190624_081100.jpg 20190624_081116.jpg 20190624_081134.jpg 20190624_162137.jpg

On my way to work Monday I got rear ended, repair shop is saying there's probably frame damage and it'll be $14k and change to repair

You guys think the insurance will try to declare it a total loss?

It's a 2011 with about 47k miles Billy 5100"s all around, "heavy duty" rear leafs (can't remember brand) spidertrax spacers on all 4 corners, and I just recently upgraded to a long trucool 4454 transmission cooler.

    Your input is much apprciated.

Dayum jealous of your low mileage. Judging by the way your spare is cuddling your diff, they might total it. I would be wary of a total frame swap

Blue book on your truck is like 23ish. Frame damage is a scary thing. I'm not sure what the threshold is for insurance companies to total something out but I would guess that if the cost to repair is less than the cost to replace then they will likely fix it. But I am absolutely guessing on this. Sorry about your loss OP. Glad you're ok though. How's the other guy look?

The other guy seemed fine, his car did require a tow though

    20190624_081721.jpg
Can't really tell from the pic but the front end suspension was messed up and the drivers side wheel wouldn't roll when the tow truck driver winched it up onto the flatbed.

From the research I have been doing 70% of the total value is the low end of the threshold and anything above 80% is definitely going to be totaled. I've spent my lunch breaks patrolling he dealerships close to where I work and it looks like it'll be around 25k to get something close and that will be minus the upgrades.

I am especially bummed out over the fact that I just got a camping trailer and can't even get it out of my driveway

Dang that doesn't look like he hit you hard enough to buckle the frame, based on his front end damage...wow. That sucks.

Distracted drivers are fuckheads, I have a post on here from my accident, looks like they just hit you hard enough to be a pain in the ass inconvenience. Here is my buckled frame just for reference but i got hit at 50+ mph. Truck was totaled, Valued at 21,750. It had 93k miles 2012 sr5 4x4

If you had a trailer hitch installed there would have at least been a satisfying amount of carnage applied to the other vehicle.

Everyone should have a hitch, even if a collision does damage your frame you’ll definitely instant karma whomever rear ends you, and sometimes you get away Scott Free.

Lol I took my hitch off the day before this happened.........

I figure he hit me going around 40-45 and I wasn't quite at a complete stop when it happened. Only reason my tailgate was spared is that he went under me.

Best defense is a good offense. To me, if some loser is gonna rear end you, you might as well do as much damage as you can to their vehicle. Tow hitch is the key. Most people say a tow hitch will cause your truck to have more damage, but honestly, at that point, your truck will never be the same anyways.

Insurance tried to total my truck two years ago and I succeeded in getting a new frame and all the necessary stuff to get it repaired. Just fight for whatevers worth it to you. If you're fine with a total loss, make sure you get a fair value for it. Never go for the figure the insurance company gives you. If you want it repaired, I'm telling you from experience that it's possible, but not without pushback.

Personally, I would push to have it totaled. Trucks with tweaked frames are never the same, regardless of what anyone says. But.. if they want to replace the frame and offer a diminished value check, that would be a good start.

Speaking from experience, go ahead and call your insurance and let them know what happened. Start pulling values of trucks with similar miles and shape as yours as chances are, his insurance company is going to low ball the hell out of you if they total it. You DO NOT have to take their first low ball offer for replacement either. Let you insurance company fight to get fair value paid to you as well.

    Whatever happens, best of luck!

This. Don't go for blue book value if they total it. Fair market value is always best. Search for trucks as close to yours as possible and note how much they're selling for. Take tax, title and licensing into consideration as well. You can get an idea of it if you have a sales contract from the dealer of where you bought your truck.

I cant believe that little car did that much damage to your truck. That thing looks like a pregnant roller skate. Driver is lucky he isn't dead. A head on collision with a squirrel likely would've totaled his car.

If the insurance company is gonna total it, you better hurry up and strip off any parts you want to keep or they are going to get them.

My 2012 got rear ended pretty good. It was a full size van, and he was probably going 60km/hr (35mph) by the time he hit me (I was stopped). He hit me on my hitch, and it did a number on his van. I drove away, he didn't. He was sore, and bent the steering wheel when he smashed into it. The engine on the van, pushed the transmission off its mounts.
Ended up being almost 12k damage to my truck. crash1.jpg crash5.jpg crash3.jpg crash4.jpg I decided to put a steel bumper on instead of another stock bumper while the insurance was fixing it. (The steel bumper was actually cheaper than the stock one!)
