So depending on how deep the sand, mud or snow is will determine which tire is better. Tacoma, especially the 3rd gens, having quite a bit of ground clearance makes it even better suited for skinny tires.

I can see where you’re coming from. Guess it depends on the sand....

I go to the surf fishing beaches in Delaware all the time and they’ve got deep sand that you don’t reach hard bottom. And there are grooves and lines from everybody else driving there too. In my experience the whole point of airing down is to widen the contact patch of the tire.....air’d down tires (<15psi) work miles better than air’d up tires (~35psi$)

I still think as a general rule of thumb wide tires are better in sand / mud and skinnies take the crown just about everywhere else off road, but there can be exceptions to any situation. The type of tire probably matters most (MT vs AT vs highway).

That's the point I'm trying to decide, like how it drives inside the truck or how it looks walking away from the truck when parked.

The rational side says stay with the 265s, you've been really happy forv 3years.

The stupid part of me wants to change to 285s because they look great..

Man I don’t have a Tacoma as you can see by my pic and user name but I can tell you are like me and a lot of guys for that matter...put 285s on you’ll like the walk away look and the cruising around feel as well don’t be ashamed embrace

 

Do your truck a favor and stick with 265s.

285s require cutting of the cab mount. You should just get 35s since you will be cutting anyway

 

Not interested in that, 40 mile daily round trip.

 

I do the same, and have 5.29s on order so Im not seeing your point.

Am I messing up a good thing bumping up to 285s?

I really liked the truck now and want to put this 285 mess to bed for a good reason.

Although there ARE plenty of trucks and 4X4s around here that I could quickly sell them if I hate them.

But then why go through that?

 

No reason to go down that road, I dont need 35s.

Honestly , your 265’s look way too small for your truck.

285’s will give you a way more aggressive look and there are plenty of people who have not done a tremendous amount of CMC to run them.

I myself am going 295’s.
Big and wide.

 

I can always build a crawler with my 1st gen, I dont need giant tires on the 3rd gen... just trying to decide if the want of 285s justifies the loss in performance.

I need to take a drive in a truck with 285s and see for myself.

 

I'm in the same boat as you OP. Already lifted. Same wheels. 285s look badass and I want them, but my 265s are awesome and I drive 70+ miles a day 5 days a week and can get 20+ MPG on summer gas. I have another year or so before I replace tires so who knows what I'll do. What I do know is that I still have some pretty expensive mods that I want to do and 285s are more money. More money per tire, more money for a 5th full size spare, more for gas, more for the speedo calibrator. Plus my buddy just got a 2003 4Runner and wants to run 265 70 17 tires and build his truck so we can wheel and camp together next year. More matching spare wheels and tires in the woods would be super. So with that being said, I'll probably be getting 285s next year . I feel like if you have the 285 itch ya just gotta scratch it.
