Moving overseas...sell or storage

Heard that man. Tough choice for him.

 

Sell it, get out of debt, buy something else with the money you save when you get back home. Save on tags, registration if needed, and insurance and no worries about how it is being taken care of.

 

Keep had an early lead in the polls but Sell is orchestrating a comeback..

 

Tough choice for him. I just know how hard it was for me to find one. Right price, right payment, right features etc... I'd hate for him to lose it when there might be options for him to keep it. But I understand everyone's advice.

 

I’d agree with that. I found mine online before I went to the dealership, I don’t think there were any others that were exactly what I wanted.

 

Pretty certain these are indoor facilities. They’ll move and cycle the various things on your car to prevent issues (not drive it on public roads)

 

Me neither. Heck, I live in Alabama and drove 200 miles one way to Georgia to get mine after 4 months of looking.

 

Yeah, I don't understand those that want him to keep it. He can always buy another Tacoma later down the road. It's not like he has one of those rare Tacomas with a desired LB and the holy grail of all hoods with the skeewp...oh..wait a minute..

 

Sell. Save all the COLA you will make over 3 years in a separate account from you bill paying account. Then when you get ready to rotate back use the AAFES car buying service or Navy fed to buy something new outright and have it waiting when you step off the plane.

I have often wanted to keep cherished belongings and have found that letting them go is ok too. If the payoff is a good thing for the family budget that really might be the way to go. Else storage seams like a good bet. I have had to “lend” cars to family members throughout my life to help them get on their feet, the cars are never the same. I knew that was a real risk but I had to put it behind me.

 

Sell it. You never know what can happen with storage or family. A long time ago, I stored my '69 GTO in a garage for the year I was away in SE Asia. I prepped the car for storage, covered it up with a canvass tarp and thought I was good. Unfortunately, the garage burned down. I survived the year, but the car did not. Sell it and start new when you get back.

 

It's a second gen! With the 4.0 V6. Keep that bad boy.

 

If you have a trusted friend who would store it for you , that’s the best scenario.
Someone who would start the truck and keep an eye on it and not use it. If they have a large building for storage the better.

 

This is what I did for a deployment. I also put everything I owned inside of the truck. Worked out well.

 

Sell sell sell. It sure looks like a nice truck and I understand the dilemma of keeping or selling. But sitting 2 years while your still making payments, why? You'll now get premium price for your truck, plus be able to become debt free again. But use some financial restraint why your deployed and set money aside for a new vehicle when you return. If your truck WAS already paid off I'd had kept it.

 

My vote is to sell. There really is no wrong answer to this as long as you are informed of the realistic results of this decision.

With that in mind, he's my own experience with a 69 Ford Bronco. Loved that POS
...3 on the tree and a real head truner. I left it with family to store for a year while finishing off school, and it became a problem for them 9 mos. later (selling house/moving). I ended up scrapping the truck because the of months while there, took it toll on the truck. Was in no position to try to sell it, and no time to move or try to find some other arrangements. Keep in mind it had a freshly rebuilt engine when it was towed away .

Moral of this story, what ever family member that holds it will most likely not appreciate or care for it like you would, unless they are an a Tacoma enthusiast as well. And while you're gone anything can happen to the truck.

Even long term storage can have it's issues. Seals will shrink and crack after a few years. Leaks will develop...all fixable with time and $$, just don't expect to be able to just jump in and drive it like today when you return.

Thank you for your service. Im prior military, when I went to Germany I had to make the same type of decision. The thing that tipped me into selling my rig was it paid off all of my debt. That allowed me while I was over there to save not just for a different rig when I got home, but also the chance to buy a house. Being its a DCLB you can get quite a bit for it, and as long as it gives you a clean slate just sell it.
