Can’t speak for Oregon but Washington (Seattle) has tons of work. My union is having a hard time manning the calls

If you want to live close in to Portland, you have options.
Intel used to have a lot to offer, but last I heard they had 1 guy on swing shift run the job of a 10 man crew.

If you want to be further out, things trail off. Dad worked for ODOT for a bit, then Intel doing low voltage with HVAC and stuff as far as I knew, then City of Portland working on signal/pedestrian heads. He spent 40 years living in Salem trying to find something local that wasn't part of ODOT. He is an incredibly hard worker and loved by his coworkers, but admittedly, he has some trouble with spelling and grammar that hurt him, so maybe that was the big issue. I know that he desperately wanted to be at Boise Cascade, but they wouldn't offer him the time of the day.

My cousin was a electrical engineer, started his own business in Hillsboro, and he's already retired... I think he retired at 46 or something crazy.

Thanks for the reply,I definitely want to be far enough outside Portland where I wouldn’t have to commute into it or do service calls there. Although I have seen some postings that are offering compensation that may sway me. Central Oregon/bend calls to me, but even though I was born and lived in Oregon the first half of my life I kinda get the vibe they won’t take well to a dude with TN plates and an acquired southern accent moving next door (or anyone else for that matter.)

Edit: your dad sounds like a good dude,I’ve known his type and they typical are responsible for getting jobs in on time and under budget whether they are foremen or not. The guys really rally around them when work gets rough. Always bums me out when the office doesn’t give them the respect they deserve.

Thanks, Sparky ( and @Chickenmunga ). I actually have some work and wanted to see about hiring one of the TWers but the work needs someone licensed in OR because it will require permit. Looks like you're in my neck of the woods, but if you're licensed in OR, let's chat.

Highly dependent on where you buy the house and work. If you are a liberal Democrat, Portland loves you as long as you don't have CA plates. If you are any other political party and don't have CA plates, you can live anywhere else in the state. Salem can go either way on the politics. Bend just wants you to accessorize with outdoor gear

Thanks for the response,I’m kind of a weird duck politically which kinda freaks me out about Oregon since it’s seems rife with extreme partisanship. I hold a lot of classically liberal views but also own guns and such so I don’t fit in anywhere really. But I don’t make anything apparent either way since I don’t find political views important to how I view people or how they view me. Portland for now (even though I hate the traffic) seems like where the big money for me is right now. Ibew local 48 is paying journeyman 44$ and hour and the merit shops there are right on their heels. I think the plan is gonna be to bank some money there and settle down in a smaller city once we start having kids, even though wages wouldn’t be as high.

You're over thinking it. Portland is awesome and welcoming. Nobody really cares, I have a few crazy ass, closed minded nutjob right wing neighbors that i'm friends with.

    Unless you have california plates.

I go back every year to visit my family there, the traffic drives me off the wall and is the only thing I really hate. But Portland’s definitely a cool place and I love visiting, great food great beer and mostly friendly people I’ve noticed. I’m just used to smaller city’s really... maybe I’ll love it more than I would bend or somewhere else.

Plus the PNW has a lot more people on the forum too, looking forward to first meet up I get to go to. Edit:Unless they have California plates lol

I feel like you just described 80% of the people in the NW, just so happens the extreme partisan people on both sides are also extremely vocal so it gives the impression that it's constant war. But as long as you just do you're thing I think you'll find that most people are pretty welcoming... except to those with CA plates.

There’s a huge number of liberal gun owners here. Myself and most of my friends and acquaintances included. Just like many other places as long as you aren’t an asshole in either direction you’ll be fine. Seems like you have the right attitude already.

Portland has issues for sure, but overall I think it’s one of the best places to live.

Ever. Curious what the physical "standard" is to get it done competently without being a liability.
