Leafs extend Hutchinson for one year. Sparks is going to get buried in the minors.

I'd be happy with that. This team is going nowhere.

Agreed, it's not completely broken, but it looks like it will be the same team minus key players.

Toronto had to clear some cap space to sign Marner, Kapanen, and Jonsson. Marleau had a no-movement-clause and said he'd only play for Toronto or San Jose. The Sharks didn't want Marleau at his huge cap hit, so Toronto found a workaround. They traded him to Carolina with a first round pick as an incentive, with Carolina agreeing to buy out Marleau.

Carolina gets the first round pick.
Toronto gets rid of Marleau's contract
Marleau can now sign with San Jose

Who do the Sharks have coming up? No I mean seriously I have no clue, I thought they were bottom ten in prospect pool rankings but maybe they have those few key pieces, a goalie and a couple of centres, sitting in the system quietly?

I was going to make a smart ass comment about the Sharks being old but when I googled old people playing hockey I just kept getting Thornton pics. Never mind, not worth it.

They have lots of cap space and bought a first rounder for $4 million. Simple as that.

Welcome to the thread. I'm a Pens fan but I don't hate the Flyers (or any team). I think Hart will be the real deal, btw. Something Phlly has been needing. plus I think they just signed Elliot 1 yr as a backup. Not bad.

Man, I wouldn't even be thinking about the good ol boys club right now though. Get Pavs signed and Timo. I love Jumbo, but I don't even think about him until those other 2 are good to go. And Marleau would be cool and all but when you just paid EK, sometimes you gotta make sacrifices. Your thoughts?

I'd agree. Priorities go to Pav and Timo, I'd like to keep Thornton And think they will, he's ready to retire if they don't come to terms and he's willing to take a deep discount. Thornton might be old but he's still valuable to the team. It would be great to get back Marleau, but at what cost and in the end will it actually help the team?

Thanks! Yeah we’ve been needing a goalie for so long, I’m glad we finally have a stable goalie and young! Now we need to bring up some prospects. Elliot is a solid backup for sure, can’t go wrong with that pair. I’ve always respected the pens, seems like them and the capitals have dominated our division for a while. The metropolitan was very competitive last season.

I just dont see how this makes the Pens better. Basically Coach Sulli is a diva and got his way. But Galchenyuck is equally irresponsible on defense and scores even less, so whatever.

Phil is a diva too, and they’re both to blame for not making a good thing continue to work.

That said, I think this has more to do with the deals Johnson and Hornqvist got. Awful, awful contracts.

He might be but he plays every game, he's cheap (relative to production), he produces, he's our best PP guy, probably our best passer and very well liked in the locker room (Geno's instagram posts since the trade prove that). But Sully wants to dog him about defense and turnovers. He's a winger. Many high profile wingers fit this mold. And Galcheyuck is 1 of them (and I don't even consider him high profile). You can't dog your best winger about defense and turnovers when your system basically looks like a pick-up game. Also your top D-man pinches at the worst times ever and tries to weave through 4 guys unsuccessfully on numerous occasions. I'm sorry but I just don't buy into your 6th defenseman (Johnson) taking the fall for the team. A lot of bad is happening when our top guys are on the ice, so don't blame the low-end players on the roster. Sid's line logged the most ice time in the playoffs and did nothing. Your top d-units were bad in the playoffs, especially Letang. So how does the blame fall on your number 6 d-man? Sorry, I don't buy it.

They’re clearing cap space to get younger. Johnson is bad in his own right, his contract just exacerbated that issue. We can’t get rid of him, and we’re not dumping Letang before Kessel.

Kessel is awesome, but he’s the most easily shedded player in this cap mess that GMJR created. This whole thing started with the Brassard trade. Nothing good has happened since we acquired him.
