I know, I know, I cheaped out and didn't get the TRD intake when it was on a 40% sale (I did get the bunch of other goodies though, including TRD exhaust), I also don't think that the TRD intake is worth the premium ($360.00+) so I decided to make my own intake that can perform just like the TRD but at a much lower price while looking factory.

Before this thread goes ape sh!t, I did NOT do it for the performance, I did it purely for the sound to complement the TRD exhaust

    Parts needed:

    1- Intake flow accelerator (Dealer): PTR03-35160-AE, $22.00
2- Intake tube with resonator (Dealer): PTR03-35160-AB, $56.00
3- TRD Panel Filter (Dealer): PTR03-34140, $35.00 (TRD sale price)
4- Dorman 696-009 Air Intake Hose (Amazon): $29.95 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078SWRV2J/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (You won't be using the smaller piece).
    5- 3.25" diameter inlet/outlet straight intake hose (Amazon): $15.67 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GX2AWSO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The install is really simple. The most important thing is to cut the silicone hose to 12cm in length, the rest is self explanatory. Unlatch and remove the air box cover, unscrew and remove the air box, remove old and install new air horn/accelerator, reinstall the air box, install TRD filter. Detach and remove factory hose/resonator from the air box cover and throttle body. Assemble all new pieces together (Dorman hose, TRD resonator and the silicone hose), secure the assembly to the throttle body then reattach the air box cover. Use two Dorman clamps and reuse two factory clamps to assemble all of the pieces. Done!

So, for roughly $160.00 (or possibly less if you shop around) one can enjoy crisp sound of a TRD intake without the Toyota's red bling bling price

Would this work with the stock paper filter? I prefer the oem filtration but wouldn’t mind more noise.

I don't see why it shouldn't. You're not changing air box.

Throatier, crisper sound, just like a TRD intake sounds. In combination with TRD exhaust it makes it a one nice sounding truck.

It looks like Amazon seller ran out of black silicone hoses a few hours after I posted this thread, lol. He still has some blue and red ones though, or you can find another seller. The most important thing is to make sure it's no more or less than 3.25in in diameter. Anything larger will be too large for the throttle body, anything smaller will be too small for the resonator, so 3.25 is a perfect size to accommodate both ends.

Que all the guys with block-spacers jammed into their suspensions and unbalanced k02's to remind everyone that CAI's 'dont do anything' and are 'for the sound' etc.. etc..

some folks here do know what they're doing. OP said he did it for the sound, so did i, speaking for myself driving a MT is a much better experience when you can hear the motor and not have to watch a tach.

I got all TRD parts from San Francisco Toyota. I am sure you can find them online for about the same or even cheaper. Check Ebay too.

It may or may not add additional HP. I haven't seen any real Dyno tests yet, thus my unwillingness to pay $360.00+ for it. If it does, great! As I mentioned before I mostly did it for the sound to complement my TRD Exhaust.

I bought the TRD intake and TRD exhaust at the same time, had them both installed at the same time, ( I have the 6mt) and although I dont have "evidence" to back it up, I feel like the throttle response was slightly better, and the sound is definitely better, without sounding ridiculous or droning. Plus they look cool.

Agree, throttle does feel better, more responsive and the sound is definitely better. Toyota did a good job on both.

I picked up the doorman intake hose kit, the 3.25" silicon hose, a K&N filter, intake flow accelerator and resonator tube.

I don't notice much of a difference honestly. But I've only been driving my truck for less than two weeks now, and coming from quite a different car before so it might take me awhile to get used to it.

I'm still considering an exhaust. TRD sounds nice, and I've heard good things about the Borla, but my dad always had issues with Borla headers for his Jeep so I'm kinda leery about that.
