In 1981, when I was 21, I was driving down a residential street to pickup a co-worker in the morning. I saw what looked like a thin puddle of water on the street. It had rained before I left so I assumed this was just a low spot on the road and I proceeded through it at about 25mph.

The next thing I remember was lying face down across the front bench seat, I looked "up" and saw the windshield was smashed and covered with blood (mine), and two "county utility" men were pounding on the driver's-side window trying to wake me up.

It was then I noticed the car was not level. The rear of the car was angled sharply up in the air. I sat up, unlocked the door, and the two men pulled me out of the car. That's when I saw that the entire front half of my car was submerged!

Apparently, a water main had burst overnight and washed away all the soil under the street, causing the asphalt to eventually collapse as well - then filled to street level appearing as a harmless puddle.

Long story short (I know, too late) I had to fight long & hard with the county before settling for what was still less than the car was worth - not to mention my injuries and lost time at work.

Bottom line: All levels of government are faceless machines with no accountability, morals or principles - be prepared to be stone-walled and don't give up!

Wow man, it's hard to believe that a manhole could do that much damage.

Do you think it was the water coming out of the hole, the cover, or just the hole itself that broke it?

Because I went wheeling with my first gen once and at 25ish mph ran into a head sized rock on my drivers side rear that shifted the crap out of my leaf springs and sheared the spring's centering pin and left the axle like this:

But it didn't do anything to the shocks, and they were shitty Pro-comps.

I reset the springs and are still driving on them to this day.

Sucks that your shocks got so screwed up.

dam bro that sucks...you could have been seriously injured and worse yet a totaled truck...

that's just screaming out law suit against the county for not properly securing the man hole...even though we all know those lids are heavy as hell...

dam...i hope the county paid for you injuries and loss of work...

My uncle ran over a uneven part of a street and it messed up his car pretty bad, his steeing along with some other stuff. Contacted the city they fixed his car. I was suprised they didn't even go to court or anything.

I didn't get any response myself (just alot of finger pointing) until I finally sent a letter from an attorney - he did it for free and said often just his letter-head gets their attention - he was right! ;)
