Do you start out from a parked position in S5? Also, if the taco switches between S5 and S4 will it show you on the steering wheel screen that it’s fluctuating?

I was not aware of the Toyota website, and I have looked on YouTube but no reliable videos on this topic. This is the Tacoma forum is it not??

Me too. Now I figure by the real men thing so many times this is a gag, and you are male and you know all there is to know about the truck the way it runs, and backing trailers is a walk in the park . That's just I figure. LOL

If not, then you have a few things to consider. The trailer weight, the amount of trailer the ball hitch holds, if you need a trailer hitch equalizer or not that assists the truck to carry the weight on the ball, the angle the trailer hitch rests at Down Hill to the ball a few degrees !!!!!!!! Because if it doesn't go DOWN HILL the trailer will try to steer the truck ! These trucks IMO are light in the rear end, and the last thing you want is at speed going DOWN HILL a real Hill is to have the trailer do the steering !

I am a real male :) I didn't know these 6 speed trannies would shift into any other gear than it was set at / placed in either. I have driven it as if it was a standard shift starting in first to 10 / 12 mph and shifting to 2nd, and so on to just see how it felt. You may use it with ETC and shift from 1st to 2nd and so on.. There are good reasons to also down shift in S mode.

Some of these might be you have pulled into a camp ground road and there are puddles you have no idea how hard and deep of a drop it might be. Or you may see pot holes and bumps where you want to go slower. You would check the tack to be sure you were in a lower RPM, probably stepping on the brakes slightly and say you had been in 3rd gear shift (bump the shifter forwards and be in 2nd gear. Let say the road is rougher and starts to go down a steep hill. Then you feel the weight of the trailer pushing you. ( with any luck this trailer you have has electric brakes ) but this time they didn't work .... in 2nd you can use the brake to slow down and select 1st gear.

The reverse might be true getting out of this camp site too . That steep hill is going to want 1st gear and with no shift to 2nd until you reach the top. ETC will help here for a bit more power if the shifter was in 2nd by mistake, or 3rd or 4th.

1st thru 4th are real gears. 5th and 6th are both over drives. Unless a highway is flat for so long that you want 70 MPH using 5th gear, first overdrive, you could use it for very light throttle pressure . (gas pedal )
That would be wanting the best economy for a long fast grade down some interstate, and once that long slight slope changed to just a little uphill again you would want 4th gear.

If you are a man like I think, there is no reason to go into axle ratios and engine rpm.

For me it was nice to know I could shift to S4 and the lower gears would still work in automatic fashion.

    real men LOL

S Mode means it's the highest gear your truck will shift to so S4 makes it a 4 speed, S5 means it's a 5 speed, S6 a six speed; it limits your highest gear unless you raise the limit bumping it up or down.

Yes you can start in S5 from a parked position, just shift to drive like normal, bump left with your foot still on the brake to S4 then bump forward to S5 and let your foot off the brake and begin to accelerate. The truck will then shift just like an automatic with a 5 speed gear box.

While in S4 it will drive like a normal auto (starting in 1st) and will continue to shift up through 4th.

If in S5 it will still start in 1st and shift up through 5th.... you just limit the high gear by choosing S4, s5 or S6. If you're in S5 but it keeps shifting between 4th and 5th automatically then remove the high gear by bumping it to S4 so your transmission wont overheat.

You wont see the gears change in S mode only what youve selected for the highest gear. You'll see it indicated in the center screen where you normally see D when in drive, it will indicate S4 by default.

Just a heads up on WA - If you plan on living in an RV near Seattle best to pick a legit RV site or trustworthy private property. There are thousands of criminals illegally RV camping around the area, especially in Seattle city limits. It's like Mad Max in some areas.

Ha Ha Ha, if this is true reread my post a few times.
Why do I get the feeling some guy is going to read me his riot act and recite from memory all there is to know about why gear ratios are and how they apply to moving weights at given engine RPM ?

Can I go with you, sounds fun! Jason explained the operation thoroughly and the S mode with ETC is the best combo for towing. Once you are able to play around with it you'll understand I'm sure.

Oh YEAH...... The truck you have uses foreign car type wiring, which means the brake and turn signals are 2 different bulbs or LEDS, and they are in separate parts of the lamps.

It is a good bet the trailer you have is wired in the American system where the brake light and turn signals share the exact same bulb, and work on a different system to blink.

This mean you will need a device that does what this one does to convert the euro system to send correct signals to the USA wired trailer.

Hoppy model #46255 powered converter gets full power to the trailer lights and protects trucks electrics at the same time.

The way this works and their maybe a factory better, I don't know, and this assumes your truck did not come with the towing package. I can't know that .

You're right, I dont want one and I know how to avoid one. There is a nice feature here for these situations.

How does my sex have ANYTHING to do with Tacoma questions? Just don’t respond if you feel it’s weird! I’m trying not to destroy my 40 thousand dollar vehicle. Got my answer to my question..

I loved the whole you don’t want a problem thing. Internet tough guy. It’s simple, just unwatch the thread.

WTF are you even talking about. At this point you’re only trolling. She said in her first post that she has the tow package.
