S mode and ECT button

The longer the trailer, the easier it is to back up. Make small adjustments when backing. Most people make too big of a correction. I’ve pulled trailers for 35 yrs and can still look foolish trying to back up a 8 foot utility trailer if I’m not paying attention. Good luck.

I have no idea if you read my explanation of trailer weight, the down hill angle the trailer must be. Of if your truck has a towing package where places to plug in trailer plugs are just there on the truck you have or NOT. They won't be if you don't have the towing package.

IMO there is no such thing as a dumb question..... There are plenty of really stupid answers and off out of place rude replies. I was not rude and if I was I didn't meant to be. Yeah little trailers cut quick, and ever faster if they are incline UP from the ball hitch This is the smallest one I backed up. I took it from NH to Cal and back hitting 40 states in 10 months .

You're just better off getting the info from Toyota than from a bunch of people who will tell you their method which might not be right.

This has been posted before and I tagged gearcruncher for a reason as he's a transmission technician and knows more than others. And in his signature I believe is a link showing what towing in overdrive gears does to the transmission and why it should be avoided.

Yeah I understood Washington state it's as far from Maine as you can get and still be in the USA in the northern half. I live about a stone's throw from the New Hampshire Maine Border. From Texas either way there are going to be mountains to get by. If won't be all flat by any means, and if somehow you can do it pretty flat you will miss a lot to see. For around my area google Rt 112 , then select maps, and images and under images all 4 seasons . I hope you understood the things I said about the weight on the trailer ball. I have no idea of that trailer in detail. But that doesn't change the bare minimum basics.

One of the things that scares me about some of the roads in the Rockies is they have truck runaway ramps far and few between and if a truck lost ts brakes and came down behind you or ME and you are going as fast as the rig you have can safely go there is going to be an issue . Have issues on steep downhill grades and on the right there is a mountain and on the left there is nothing but thin air issue get serious fast. if your trailer does the steering like a shopping cart with buggered up front wheels you can have a bad hair day.

This talk of me being a troll is foolish. I am 67 years old almost 68 . I have been in almost every state in the lower 48 and by motorcycle pulling it's little trailer . One of these little road trips ended up with 24,000 miles before it was over.

In case you find anything interesting. The fly rod case had a map that is the entire lower 48 rolled in that case with a fly rod. If you can make out the rear under edge there is a white bump. That is an ATV rifle case a tad too short for the .40 cal Kentucky Flintlock, which I had to add 12 inches of truck radiator hose to make it fit the gun. Being it was going to be under the trailer deck , it got painted white to reflect heat better and be out of any rain. The rifle is not of big box store type places and is custom and so worth a few dollars. MY wife was with me. We do historical reenacting for several time periods. On this trip we hopped to run across Lewis and Clark event and play, so we each had a set of duds to wear for if and when we came on to any. We did here and there and other back east in Va, Tn , and Ky .

For camp chairs we had joint compound buckets. Used for seats, storage and washing cloths. We had ordinary modern clothing too and rain suits for a bike .

 

I just have a splendid time dropping my canoes and kayaks at a boat ramp I even see REAL MEN all screwed up . Sooner or later most of them get lined up and actually put a boat in the water ! Sometimes I get to drive a 1 ton dump with a car carrier trailer, and seem to get 'lucky' most of the time. Then I see guys with big rigs backing to place that would make me cry . I an old long hair very rural country boy. I know when to fold my cards, and get expert help and am willing to pay for it. That doesn't happen much .

 

Since mirrors were mentioned, I'll point out that depending on the width of your trailer, you may not need extensions. You may want to adjust the mirrors correctly, however, and the ideal positioning is one where you can't see the side of the vehicle/trailer unless you slightly rotate your head that direction from your normal driving position. In other words, when you look at the side mirrors in normal driving position, you do not want to see the side of your vehicle / trailer. You want to see what's next to you.

 

Actually, the Micro Minnies are only 7' wide so the factory mirrors are workable. 8' wide, yes.

 

Welcome to TW! Look at S mode like a manual/stick shift. You can shift it up or down at whatever RPMs you choose. In ECT mode, you're basically still driving the truck in automatic mode, just shifts at higher RPMs. ECT is handy when you're carrying extra weight in your truck as you want your RPMs to be a little higher before you shift. You do this by mashing the gas pedal harder while in ECT mode, or manually shifting down a gear in S mode. If you are in S mode, there's really no need for ECT, because you are manually controlling where your shift points are, when ECT pretty much is set for you, just as D is as well.

 

What Micro Minnie do you have? I had a 1706fb, very nice trailers, great features in a short trailer. Backup cam is a nice feature, backing takes a lot of practice.

Nice. Something to think about is having lift blocks installed above those Lippert axles. Cost me $1000 for parts and labor on the 1706fb which has the same axles.

Gets you more ground clearance if you want to take it offroad. The sewage pipes hang a bit low stock.

 

going through some old posts and saw this pic. Reminded me of a near miss I had a few years back.

My wife and I both ride (rode) our own bikes. We lived in Ogden, Utah and had ridden to an event in east Texas, in early June. We were headed home, and the weather took a turn and it got cold, very cold. My wife couldn’t continue, so we got a room just east of Albuquerque. The next morning we got a small Uhaul truck and loaded her bike in it. Now the part that reminded me of your pic...

I was riding a ‘99 Kawi Nomad, it had a hitch and I was pulling a small cargo trailer. First big trip with the trailer. We couldn’t get both bikes in the Uhaul, so I continued on the bike with my wife following in the Uhaul. We were on I-40 a few miles east of Gallup, NM when we hit snow. Snow! On I-40 in June!!! There was about 3-4 inches of wet slush on the road, we had about 8 miles to go before the Gallup exit where we planned to turn north. I slowed down to about 35 mph and was staying in the wheel tracks of the other vehicles and doing OK. Then the front end suddenly flopped the right and I thought I was going down. Believe it or not I could feel the trailer helping me stay upright. I made it to the exit, and stopped for a bit to calm my nerves. Luckily we made it home without any further incidents.

also, do you need to let off the gas to change gears in s-mode? or can you shift at full throttle?
