The thing is, you only had Kessel for like 2 more years. Also, he is younger than your 3 main core guys (Sid, Geno, Kris). So no need to 'get younger' and get rid of him when he won't even be into his mid 30s yet before that current contract ends. Plus, you do not get that production for under 7mil a year, you just can't. And we didn't even clear 2mil in the deal, so really it isn't much else you can do with it. I realize the JJ deal is a bad contract and somewhat ties up too much money. And obviously Letang needs to stay, I agree. I just don't buy all of the excuses given here. It's a win now team. This past year, that Pens team was younger than the 17 team, as far as average age. It's all just cliche bullshit. And yes, the Brassard kinda screwed us but no one would have thought that it wouldn't work out. But again, thats another guy who had issues with the coach. So there is a pattern there (Geno, Cole, Kessel etc)

Sully would be the third or fourth coach some of those guys have had a problem with. They need to quit being divas and play the game he wants them to play - the one they won back to back cups playing.

Kessel put up numbers playing with Malkin and pouted like a bitch when he got taken off his line to shake things up. He needs to act like a professional.

Pens are no doubt a better team with him, but they need to shed money, get younger, and rebuild through BETTER trades because all of the trades they’ve made lately have been disastrous for cap and development.

    edit

lol, now they’re going to sign Taney to 5-6

I just think I lost some faith in Sully when I see the defensemen playing very irresponsible and taking no criticism from him. But Kessel and Geno have to shoulder that blame. I do agree that the players need to be held responsible too and Kessel did seem to tune out Sully and act like he didn't care, Geno too. But that goes back to my first point, so I dunno what to think.I hope this trade works out. Galchenyuk is a good player and maybe he will thrive in the Pens line-up. And if that prospect turns out to be a stud, then maybe we do win that trade, overall in the long run. And ya Tanev at 6 years 3.5mil/per. Good player, I like his game. Seems like too long for a player like that.

Knock Dubas all you want, but he now has only 1 roster spot he must full and one RFA he needs to take care of with 10 million in cap an 5 million in LTIR created space left to play with. Didn’t give up much either to get there. The only tangible large asset was the pick to Carolina.

BTW I love Spezza as our fourth line center at league minimum. That dude can win tough draws.

Whoa Habs, shots fired. I wouldn’t be shocked to see a Marner offer sheet shortly for right under the max RFA penalty tier, which is just over ten IIRC.

Seem like Aho is just using the RFA system to get the maximum in bonus money at the term/AAV he thinks the Hurricanes can afford.

Kadri and change to the Avalanche for Tyson Barrie and change. Colorado retains half of Barrie’s salary for this year, the last of his contract.

Definitely an upgrade for TO especially since Barrie plays from the right.

Sorry to see Kadri go. Yes, he hamstrung us in the playoffs but he was the grit for so long. Trading from a position of strength at centre and if Barrie resigns this deal is great for TO without the rest of the baggage the media will probably focus on.

The biggest plus? Now OZ-T has more Kadri games against the Canucks to whine about.

The Aho deal is hilarious. Dundon will laugh at it and match. This was just a PR move.
In own habs season tickets and they sent out emails basically begging for us to upgrade pur seats and they usually don't. I think missing out on tavares and duchene killed them in the media and they wanted to do something. They know they won't get Aho or they would have done 10.5 or more

Yeah, makes sense. Great deal for Aho anyways. He gets the term and the bonus structure he wanted. There is lots of talk in the league that some owners feel that the rules are stacked against small market teams again. The cap is over double what it was ten years ago and the use of extremely front loaded bonuses in contracts by large market teams has put a lot of pressure on ownership even with the teams being worth a lot of money now. I can guarantee Carolina did not want to hand over almost all of Aho's salary in years one and two, which are also front loaded, paid in July in the form of bonuses before he even plays a game for that season.

Is it possible that no GM thinks Marner is worth 11mil+, hence why no offer sheet has been offered/signed? And do you think Panarin's AAV helps or hurts Marner there, seeing he is now highest paid winger with just over 11.5mil/yr?

I don't think any GM is desperate enough to give Marner more than the Leafs have already offered. That being said I don't think an offer sheet has to be more necessarily, it just has to be what the player wants at least in the near term. I could see Marner pushing a team like the Habs to give him an offer sheet for 10.5 million over 3 years. That way Marner gets what I think he wants, which is a huge overpaid bridge deal that leaves a chance to get overpaid twice in a row, while leaving the contract at a level that the Leafs fanbase will expect Dubas to match. The risk is, of course, that the Leafs walk from that and Marner goes to whoever signed the offer sheet. I do think he's being manipulated by his father and others in the background into thinking he's far better than he really is. The risk is that he ends up on a terrible team, looks mediocre, and suddenly in three years he's only worth a reclamation deal and his development has probably been stunted to the point where he will never make what he could of in a fair deal with Toronto.
