New '07 Tacoma owner, need help...

Hello;

Long story short, recently brought home a 2007 Tacoma and have some specific maintenance questions I can't seem to find the answer after reading until my eyes are crossed. I'm hoping for some help from some experienced and friendly TW posters....

*Does the rear differential need a lube modifier like Equa-Torque? On my differential cover there is the "Only LSD oil" sticker. I plan on using synthetic

75w-90 GL-5 gear oil. Do I need to use the additive in my case?

*I have a 5 speed automatic transmission (according to VIN check with a dealer) and plan on doing a drain/fill procedure 2 or 3 times and trying to figure out if Mobil 1 delco ATF will work or if Valvoline Max Life synthetic ATF is better?

These are the two questions I have for now I can't seem to find the answer. Any and all help greatly appreciated.

 

Is there something wrong with the trans? How many miles? I'm not sure why you want to do a drain/fill 2-3 times. Seems like a waste of time and money. I could be wrong, but isn't the trans fluid lifetime?

 

Yes you need lsd additive if it's normal fluid, and it's usually pointless to do that many drains unless some other circumstances. If you are concerned drop the pan, change the filter, and fill with same amount that come out. Then check the level after it has come to tempature. There are reasons to do that many drains, but not normal use at all. Fluid is lifetime of transmission, which means 100,000 miles so they can sell you another. Just keep it clean with a drain and fill and change the filter every 150,000 miles and you'll be fine.

 

Did you get a service history with the purchase? Any idea what’s been done and when?
Is something causing you concern with the transmission that makes you feel a need to service it?

 

It has 150,000 and history is unknown. I like doing the work and don’t mind spending the money to make sure maintenance is up to date.

So, to confirm the LSD additive is necessity with synthetic diff fluid?

I’ll be changing the transmission fluid just not sure which fluid to use, Mobil 1 ATF or Valvoline Max Life...and need to confirm Mobil 1 is WS compatible. Does anyone have input or experience with these fluids?

As with anything the fluid will age and a change will be needed. There is a thread about the WS fluid.

 

Welcome to the site. For that many miles, at the least drop the pan and replace the filter and clean the pan. Now for fluid, many are either using OEM Toyota WS or Valvoline Max Life.

For the rear differential, you have a mechanical LSD. Some synthetic fluids already have the LSD additive. I do know Mobil 1

75W-90 says "limited slip friction modifier included" right on the bottle.

Mine is a TRD Sport and has a LSD rearend I believe I used Mobil 1

75W-90 with LSD additives. Works great. If you have a Off-Road with a locker your needs will differ.

 

I got a 08 sports and was thinking about changing the front,rear, and trans fluids also. Should we use lsd additives on all 3?
