Witnessed some chainsaw-related full send as a kid, prime example: grew up in Fairbanks, AK, and my dad and I would hunt moose on the upper Chena river. We had a zodiac inflatable with an outboard motor that we used to get up the river. Frequently at the beginning of the summer you’d go up river and find trees down across the river. Sometimes, if they were semi-submerged, my dad would just motor up, give it a quick look, float down a bit, then gun it to jump the log (in a soft-bottom inflatable mind you). If it was above the surface, on more than one occasion he had me run the motor to keep it nosed up against the log, while he stood with one foot on the boat, other foot on the log, and chainsawed through the log. In an inflatable boat. I wonder some times what shit he got up to when I wasn’t around.

Gas no electric, I keep a Husqvarna 445 in the truck, starts every time and only gets used 3 or 4 times a year.

I have both a folding hand-saw as well as a pocket chainsaw that I carry when mountain biking up at higher elevations. I also have these with me in my truck in addition to a Pulaski.

I use mine almost everyday. Cuts through 12-16” power poles like butter with a carbide chain. Batteries last a long time.

I know they've come a long way, but it's a hell of a lot easier to top off the gas tank in the middle of nowhere than charge a battery.

Guess it depends on what you're using if for, but for trail clearing, firewood cutting, bench making, etc. I'll stick with a gas saw.

That's taking an adversarial stance with the FS, and doesn't do anybody any good. If they don't know there's a problem, they can't fix it. If they know people are going around something now because it's the only thing blocking the trail, they may send someone up to clear it specifically to prevent further damage. Resource protection doesn't have to mean shut it down. But the more people who use some idiot's bypass, the more damage gets done, the more permanent it is, and that is what starts closing trails.

Now obviously, if you're there and have the ability to fix it, go for it. If, like OP, you don't, then you report it asap so someone who can will get out there. If he called it in when he got back, it may be clear by the time a group of people from here show up next weekend. Or they may not be able to get there that fast. Or maybe the group from here ends up not going so it sits like that another three or four weeks with people using the bypass the whole time because the FS still doesn't know about it.

Popping in here, I used to live in Wy and now in WI so I still follow this thread. Mega downgrade for access :pout: but upgrade in trees to cut up. My family always had stihl. I went on a limb and got a clone ms361 from huztl.net. Been a good saw for the 6 tanks I've got through it so far. Runs like a Stihl but doesn't feel like the real thing. But who cares when it cuts the same right! Put the pitchforks away for not buying local please. Worth a look if your a casual user since these China clones will probably work just fine in all environments besides a daily professional scene.

I agree. I’m not biased either way but in my line of work the electric is lighter and and more agile. I also carry a Husqvarna on my truck but it rarely gets used. For general purpose though 2 batteries is plenty for a long camping weekend.

I’ll note that I have played with my buddy’s ryobi 40v electric chainsaw, and been pleasantly surprised with it for modest yard work (stuff up to 7 or 8”), didn’t give me any indication it couldn’t handle more.

    Why i bought one
Thats what i bought works good for my needs. I have the 40volt mower so it made sense. It helped last year clearing a spur trail thanks to @YamaDirtrider :rofl:and cleared a window maker at our camp Sight. We talked about this a little last year. I also went electric due to the fire bans last year.
