Wow that's bad. Did you buy your truck new? It almost looks like it was quicksand and then repainted white!

Yes bought it completely new a little over 2 years ago. Not sure if that is primer or paint under there, but it really easily flakes off. Almost in the exact same place as the OP so I'm wondering if it's a larger issue with how they painted those areas.

Hey OP, I've seen several threads about people having 2017 paint issues in Blue and White coming from Mexico. Where was your truck built?

Canada or Japan build? I ask because I also have a 15 Rav4, just want to know exactly how much sleep I should lose haha. Mine is a Japan build, no signs of paint issues yet.

Dropped the truck off this morning and just heard back from the dealer. They will be repainting the area since it is still under warranty. Was also able to take care of the steering/surging tsb while there. Happy that Toyota is making it right!

It is in part due to environmental regs. In the late 80s paint manufacturers had to reformulate their automotive paints due to VOC emissions. Water based automotive paints were developed and solvent based automotive paints were reformulated to meet the new EPA emission rules.

Even spray equipment was re-engineered (look up HVLP) and the paints had to be further reformulated to atomize properly in the newly re-engineered spray equipment.

Most automakers use automated spray equipment to apply paint in their factories.

The paint issues you see on Toyotas today are seen on other makes as well. The room for error is much larger with the new environmental paints and they don't hold up as well as the pre EPA paints of the early 80s.

This happened to me back in March. Dealership giving me the run around until today. They keep telling me they need 3 quotes from auto body shops. Do you know what the process was when you brought your truck in?

I just brought my truck in to the dealer and showed him the paint flaking off. Service advisor said he saw several white trucks already with the same issue in the same place so he already knew what the process was like. The body shop inspected it the same day and offered to repaint it which took about 2 weeks. Dealership provided a rental of any Toyota vehicle I wanted during the 2 weeks. This was at Longo Toyota in El Monte, CA.

That wasn't my point. My point is that the application process has everything to do with it, not the paint itself. Otherwise, my wifes 2016 would be showing signs of peeling. But it's not, it's perfect. Plenty of cars look perfect after many years with the newer style paint. Has nothing to do with the product and everything to do with the process.

Also, growing up my dads 1986 Ford peeled like crazy in the late 80s. Must have been the paint right? Nobody knew about it because "Ford world" wasn't around to listen to his complaints.

That's 100% not a factory paint job defect. Someone had to repair and repaint that area - and didn't do it well.

Was your dealer able to fix this? I have the same truck and same problem. Even had the break light replaced a few weeks ago. The paint is also peeling in the same spot.

Looks like factory ecoat green underneath to me . A repair would be a grey or white sealer underneath unless filler was used in which case it would be a gray primer . Looks like there was a delay in the production line and the ecoat reached the end of the topcoat window and there is a bonding issue. Will be covered by warranty if he hasn't hit his mileage or time limit .

Wouldn't be surprised to find the manufacturing date is either the same day or really close to the point that the E-coat was the same batch number .
